  1. What can I do with an old desktop PC ?

I bought a new Dell desktop six months ago to replace my six-year-old HP (i7-930, Win 7, 8 GB, 1000 + 500 GB drives).

And I got a Lenovo laptop with dock to replace my wife's HP desktop (i3-540, Win 7, 4 GB, 640 GB drive).

Unlike the many replaced desktops of the past that were only fit for the junk man, these are pretty decent ones.

So ... what could I do with them?

    :)

What can I do with an old desktop PC ?

While I am writing this, I actually have two PCs and one older laptop in the closet. I have variously considered using one or more for File Servers, Backup storage for Macrium Reflect images of my production PCs, and even Home Media servers for when the grandkids come to visit. Since none of these ideas is urgent, yet, (I have loads of storage drives and Cloud storage) I actually have yet to implement any of my own suggestions. *Smile Just some food for thought to share with you...

  5. You could try to sell it to some poor student. Just don't price it too high.
I have 7 computers all updated to Win10 & they are all 4-10 years old.
Nobody seems to want them since the economy has recovered.

I use mine for backup storage and mess with Linux on them.

if they are still kicking try donating to a school or something, just clean the drives of any personal stuff.

you know the kids will find it.*chuckle

Well, if you haven't already done it,

you could install something like MediaPortal on it and use it as the basis of your home's home entertainment center.

  10. Hi,
Well now I have your motherboard and a Q9550 cpu I'm not using plus 4x2gb's of crucial ram for it and 2 unused pretty good cpu coolers *Smile
Too bad you don't show a region
Q9550 is the best upgrade to that motherboard mine still worked very well before I retired it.

  11. A media center is of no use to me. I don't watch TV. And my wife uses the DVR for whatever she needs.

I guess the donation idea is best.
Now ... how do I wipe my stuff off the drives?

I know how to do a full wipe, but that would leave the PC with no OS. Not a very useful donation.
I'd prefer to just delete all of "our files", and then do a wipe on all unused sectors. This would leave Windows intact.

    Suggestions?

I'd give them away to those in need if you don't want to keep them - but clean or remove the disks.

I just dusted off my 2004 PC which I keep as a backup and I'm now using this museum piece to see how far I can push Windows 10. I spent the princely sum of £5 for a Windows 7 licence then upgraded it for free to Windows 10 Pro. See Windows 10 on 2004 PC?

  13. What can I do with an old desktop PC ?

As a 'Still Working' retired PC tech, my customers are always giving me their old PC's when I set up a new one for them. I now have 20...... 14 Desktop and 6 Laptop PC's, all running windows 7 or better and all in great shape. I've set up a New User (me) with a fictitious name, like "Joe", on all of them and then deleted the old user which also deletes all the old user's personal files. That's a quick and easy way to change ownership on a PC, without damaging the OS, or loosing proprietary Drivers. Of course I clean out the junk files, clean the registry and defrag the hard drive. Then if anyone needs a replacement PC, CHEAP, I can provide them one at a very minimal cost. They mostly just pay for me to deliver and set up the PC for them. I only send PC's to Reclamation when they have bulging capacitors on the motherboard. Everything else is repairable. Cheers mates! *Cool

Do a Clean install of each to Windows 10 while it's still free, then donate them. Most schools won't want them as they have their own IT department and budget but some Thrift Stores affiliated with local churches might be thrilled to get them. I know I would be as I work at my churches Thrift Store. I refurbish donated computers, install Windows on them then sell them cheap (or give them away in some cases). The money then goes to our social outreach center to support our food pantry and provide help with utility bills for low income people.

You could also contact a local school and see if they know of anyone who could use them.

I do the same, but I wiped the HDD and install a Clean version of Windows 10 and some basic software like MS Office etc. And I sell it at a deep discount. Just removing the account gets rid of their personal files, but they may have files somewhere else on the drive as well as software another user won't want or need.
