what causes my endnote reference number to skip ahead a few pages from the last endnote I entered in word 10?

Windows 10 putting my Endnote into a "locked volume"- whatever that means

I have been using Endnote for years on my PC and using my current Endnote version (8.2) for 1 1/2 years with Windows 10 no problem. Just recently without my making any changes (except maybe auto Windows updates) I get a message on Endnote saying the file
is in a "locked volume" and while I can open it I cannot add references or edit it in any way. I have tried multiple times to save a duplicate and use that. But after I use the duplicate 2-3 times on my PC it happens again. My only work around is keeping Endnote
on my flash drive. But it is very annoying. Any suggestions as to 1] why this started to happen and 2] How to fix it. Any help most appreciated. Thanks Joe Marrone

 

how to add a new chapter after a previous chapter with endnotes?

In my class, 10 children have written 10 individual stories wherein each story (or chapter) has its own specific endnotes.

HOW do I join the stories into one single book but leave the endnotes at the end of each story? Thank you, Jane

I found an answer to my own problem and am posting here if it helps others.

It is not a referencing bug but to do with 'track changes' and other settings on your document (especially documents that are edited, and the track changes look less conspicuous).

1.You need to click on View.

2. Select draft.

3. Select references.

4. Scroll through the endnotes / footnotes that are thought to be missing.

5. Delete the text and superscript number in the main part of your doc that you had pasted elsewhere. Or you can right-click and 'accept deletion'.

6. The numbers will re-calibrate.
