Windows 10: What do I needfort WSUS

Hi all.

I volunteer at a senior center computer facility. We provide 10 Windows HOME machines with access to the internet. We reimage the machines between sessions, and often between users to keep the machines virus and malware free. We also allow users to plug into our system with their own laptops, so they can access the internet with their equipment.


We chose to only update one of our machines to Windows 10. That machines insistance on downloading updates has been an issue. I typically install updates on Saturday on the Windows 7 machines, but the Windows 10 machine won't let us manage the updates. As a result it is often out of commission between when the updates are available, and Saturday when I can thaw the machine so it can install the updates, and freeze the machine again.

We mostly turn off the Windows 10 machine for the rest of the week if Windows updates are available. We have 3 years to plan and accumulate funds to address this situation.

I assume we are going to need to update all the machines to PRO,
Buy a Server
Buy a WSUS server
Network them all together and setup some WSUS scripts.
Hire a networking consultant,

Will we still be able to accommodate home users and android and apple tablets if our computers are controlled by a domain. I assume this will complicate DCHP.

This is so over my head, and I am the go to person on this.

How much is this going to cost at a minimum?
Can this be done by people who only know how to manage a router and modem?

This may just force us to close our doors.....

What do you find that is "(not able to be managed) by WUA, WSUS, WUFB or WTS?"

 

There are a couple of settings that may help avoid the need for Pro or WSUS.

The active hours doesn't really do anything does it? I mean its still going to download those files repetitively after every reimage. . It just won't reboot at that time. We had more control when we had a restart time. I can't seem to get that option to come back. It is always disabled.

I don't get why Microsoft is limiting our use of computers to 10 hours per day during designated hours, but apparently they are getting away with this.

Since the machines are active in the morning, afternoon and evening, it is still going to reboot at will during the morning session, or in the evening during classes. I think active hours gives us less control than before.

I can't believe MS is getting away with this. I was hoping by this time they were willing to give us some control, but apparently not. I have till 2020 to get this resolved, but we need to budget for this now.

 

Yes, but the second setting I suggested helps with that. As long as at least one machine on your network hasn't been reimaged yet and has still got the latest updates, then the others will get their update from that rather than downloading from MS.

 

Microsoft have given us a tool to hide updates, its called wushowhide. There's a tutorial here...

Wshowhide has been available for quite a while. Install a bad update and you can uninstall and block it.

Yes I suppose we could get another computer and leave it on all the time, so that we could have one that wasn't turned off during the day...... We just couldn't have anyone use it, because seniors are malware magnets.

It really seems that this is WSUS territory. Hence my original question. What is involved in setting up a server to do nothing more than WSUS.
