Windows 10: What does "delete" mean in advanced special permissions?

The definitions I have found so far are circular, for example:


"Delete: Allows or denies deleting the file or folder. If you do not have Delete permission on a file or folder, you can still delete it if you have been granted Delete Subfolders and Files on the parent folder."

I could guess that "delete" allows or denies deleting files or folders. What does "delete" mean?


Does over-writing a file count as deleting?

Does renaming a file count as deleting?

Does moving a file count as deleting?

Does changing the contents of a file count as deleting?

Does saving a file after making changes count as deleting the old file?

Permission issue


Presumably because TrustedInstaller is the owner (hence you need its permission), suggesting that img3.jpg was installed by Windows at some time.

Presumably that also means it can be uninstalled. How did you get it in the first place? Where is it located?

If you really want to delete it yourself, then taking ownership would seem a logical first step.

 

No permissions

Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

• Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
  
• Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
• Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
  

This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.

 

Do Not Have Permission to Delete Items

Are you signed in as the administrator on your new laptop? If yes, but you can't delete the files, and it's giving you the error message "You do not have permission to delete files," you can take the ownership of the files or folder. To do that, follow these
steps:

• Right-click on the file or folder and go to Properties . Under Properties, click on “Security” Tab.
• Click Advanced, then click Change from the Owner tab.
  
• Click on Replace owner on subcontainers and object and click
  Apply.
• Once you click on Apply, you’ll see a warning message. Click on Yes to proceed, then click
  OK.
• Next, click Advanced again.
• Now under the Advanced permissions, you will see the option to add Multiple Objects. Add multiple objects and to inherit permission you can click on
  Change Permissions, then you can enable basic permissions.

After applying the changes on the permission, you can try deleting the files again.
