Windows 10: What does ! mark on c drive mean?

    What does ! mark on c drive mean?


    I got (!) mark on C drive of my windows 10 workstation as below.

    I thought this can be fixed by check disk command from command prompt or GUI error checking tool, so I have completed following process with admin permission, and they are done without any error, but the ! mark is still showed up there after reboot.

    What I did for check disk

    -----------------------------

    (1) Press the Shift Key and click Restart
    (2) Your PC will boot into the Windows Recovery Environment
    (3) Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Command Prompt
    (4) Run this command and hit Enter:
    chkdsk C: /f
    (5) Wait for that to complete and run this command:
    chkdsk C: /r
    (6) Restart your PC

    What I did for error checking

    -----------------------------

    (1) Right click C drive and select properties

    (2) Tool tab

    (3) Click "Check" button of Error checking

    (4) Scan drive

    (5) Restart your PC


    I am taking look at event log, but I couldn't find out any error/warning related to the mark of C drive now. The error 98 used to be on System event log before I did check disk and error checking, but it won't show up there any more, but (!) mark is still there..

    Volume C: (\Device\HarddiskVolume2) needs to be taken offline to perform a Full Chkdsk. Please run "CHKDSK /F" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME <drive:>" locally or remotely via PowerShell.

    I need to identify the cause of this issue. Any advice will be gratefully appreciated..



    This is my Windows 10 configuration.


    -Windows 10 Enterprise version 1607 64 bit

    -SSD

    -AppLocker is on

    -Secure Boot is on

    What does this exclamation mark icon mean on my drive C?


    I just noticed that if I open up the root drives folder on my desktop in Windows Explorer, the disk C: is showing with this exclamation mark icon:

    Looks like you have Bitlocker enabled, but not activated.
