What does Power Off do, that might help with performance issues?

I mean, technically, how would using the power button to switch off a completely stuck system make any difference to a problem like this?

After leaving the machine on overnight, one time, it got so bad that the only way out was to switch it completely off.

The Power button is otherwise set to Hibernate, but it wouldn't even do that!

Since completely powering off the system I have had very little problem at all, and I'm curious as to whether that might help explain what was going on.

It wasn't switched off at the wall though, btw.. Actually it's connected to a UPS, which I didn't turn off either.

Tested it with Restart and Shutdown, a few times. It's a bit early to tell for sure, but I think Hibernate might've reproduced the problem to a minor extent.

Sometimes it appears, but briefly, for no reason that I can see. Otherwise, it sometimes happens due to simply clicking on Chrome. Only lasts a few seconds though; Not minutes, like before.

Once it was caused by clicking on tray icons. Only two as far as I know, one of which was for Windows Defender - as it was showing a notification for attention required.

Running the Troubleshooter, and after "Reset temporary internet files location to default", I'm presented with this:

What does Power Off do, that might help with performance issues? e558f335-e273-45cb-b25f-03a084dc6638?upload=true.jpg

Well.. I couldn't see a single indication of any app(s) not working, so there was nothing to "reset", and very unsurprisingly the Troubleshooter showed "Hanging or crashing apps" as "Not fixed".

I don't remember for sure, but I'm fairly certain I would've tried Restart at least. Then, Power Off again fixed whatever Windows Defender was indicating was wrong. It changed the tray icon indicator back to all good at any rate.

It might be worth noting I have re-installed Windows somewhere along this journey, but that didn't help in the slightest.

Last resort is a "Clean install" of Windows.

I can see a few different methods to either "Reset" or "Refresh" Windows, also described as "Clean install". If it comes to it though, then I'm considering more like format disc and start from scratch.

    Any advice always appreciated.

    :)

    Hi Adithyaram,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern regarding the issue that you are facing.

I suggest you to follow the steps bellow and check if it helps

    Method 1: Hardware Troubleshoot

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with power. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Power.

    Refer these steps:

    • Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons
    • Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
    • Run the Power troubleshooter

Method 2: I suggest you to update drivers and check if that helps. If that issue persist please uninstall and reinstall latest drivers available in manufacturer website. Both Display
    driver and Audio drivers.

    • Press “Windows + X” and select Device manger.
    • Select Display Adapter and expand the driver icon.
    • Right click on the driver icon and click on Update.
    • Follow the onscreen instructions to update the driver.

  4. What does Power Off do, that might help with performance issues?

    power issue

    Hello,

Most of the time, this issue is caused by external devices that are possibly keeping the PC active which then results in the screen/display not turning off even after you've set the power settings. Try disconnecting any external devices, usually gaming devices,
and check if the issue persists.

We also suggest running the Power troubleshooter to automatically troubleshoot any power issue. Just follow the steps below:

    • Click on Search/Cortana, and then type Troubleshooting.
    • Click on Troubleshooting.
    • Click on System and Security.
    • Click on Power.

Let us know if that worked out for you.
