  1. What edition will I get from retail Win7 Ultimate?

    Hi
So, I have a retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate that i've installed on 2 PCs so far (one at a time obviously, I bought it with my first Windows 8 laptop before 8.1 came out, back when 8 was a total crap shoot. Then sold that laptop but removed the retail Win7 and put Win8 back on for the buyer, now running that copy on my most recent self build). I have a couple of questions regarding the "free" update to Win10:

Which version of Windows 10 will I get, seeing as there is no more "Ultimate" editions of windows?
    and
Will my copy still be "retail" , as in , will I be able to move it to a new PC when I get one?

    Cheers

    :)

  2. Windows 7 retail license upgrade to Windows 10

I have a retail version of Windows 7 Home Premium, Upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, then 8.1 Pro.

What edition will I get after upgrading to Windows 10?

Will there be install media(e.g. iso image)/activation key(or will the Win7 or the Win8 key work?) available for me for bare-metal reinstall(I have official Windows 8 discs as well as the whole Win7 retail package), or will I always need to go through the
    tedious gradual install?

upgrade from win10 home to pro using a win8 product key

    Is this possible ?

Win7 home on an OEM pc.

I have a win 8 pro ( not 8.1 upgrade retail product key.

If I upgrade win7 hp to win10 home,

can I use the win8 pro retail key to upgrade win10 to pro

    edition ?

  4. What edition will I get from retail Win7 Ultimate?

As far as I know, both questions are unanswered as yet.

I've got a retail Windows 7 license myself and am not inclined to give it up in exchange for anything less than a "retail" license of Win 10--which may or may not come to pass. I'm not interested in anything that doesn't include the right to a clean install on new hardware at will, whether free or not.

I'll bypass the free upgrade entirely and just buy 10 outright if the alternative is to sacrifice a Win 7 retail license.

The only retail license I have is a W8 which I'll be keeping, although I have two spare OEM W7 licenses which I'll happily trade one of. I'll also buy a retail W10, maybe two or three if the price is right in the first year or so.

  7. My guess is Ultimate would get you 10 Pro. 10 Pro should have all the features 7 Ultimate had. Windows 7 Professional and up would likely get you 10 Pro. 7 Home and below would get to Windows 10.

What edition will I get from retail Win7 Ultimate?

    #1:
If you upgrade from Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic or Home Premium or from the basic Windows 8 edition to Windows 10, you will get a basic Windows 10. In case of Windows 10 Technical Preview it's then easy to convert to Windows 10 Pro, simply go to Control Panel, select Add Features and using the general Windows 10 Technical Preview product key add the Pro features.

If you upgrade from Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate editions to Windows 10 you will get Windows 10 Pro.

    #2:
It will most probably be a retail upgrade edition, which in worst case scenario means that if you want to use it on another computer you might need to install the original OS you upgraded (for instance Windows 7 Ultimate) and then upgrade it again.

My answers based on my own tests with various upgrade scenarios with Windows 10 Technical Preview (#1) and past practices of Microsoft (#2).

I'm confused on this. I read somewhere they may not go with home/pro versions, just one version. It would be nice also if using a W7 license which has Windows Media Center you could get that with W10 too.

I admit that the only "hard evidence" I have at the moment is Technical Preview. How the final product will be, I do not know.

  11. It's best guess for now. Microsoft hasn't said how its going to work, not officially anyway. Not as far as I know.

  12. Thanks everyone. Agree with the logic of no deal if it isn't retail. If its cheap at first i'll buy a bunch of retail licenses.

Guess its just a wait-and-see for now *Smile

  13. What edition will I get from retail Win7 Ultimate?

I also have Win7 Ultimate, and these are the same questions that I have regarding Win10 upgrade offer. I want and hope that the result of the Win 10 upgrade will be like having a movable single license of a full-featured Win 10 in the likeness of the movable single license of Win 7 that I currently own and have used across multiple new PC builds (being used only on 1 PC at a time).

  14. Remember MS said UPGRADES to Windows 10 will be free. So you will have to purchase a NEW copy of Windows 10 if the machine doesn't qualify for the FREE UPGRADE. SO i bet you just to the upgrade and the same rules still exist. You will do it via the update.

Well first of all when you buy a retail version of Windows you are buying MS support. When you buy a machine with OEM windows you are buying OEM support and it you buy OEM from Newegg and install on a machine you built your on your own.

Recently MS has had a program if you buy a PC with the older OS 60 days before the new OS came out the new OS was free when released. You had to signup on a list and the OEM sent you the media. Now nothing was done with the retail version in this situation because you had to buy an OEM system not just the OS.

That being said MS hasn't said whether you will receive your Windows 10 upgrade Media update from the OEM or MS or both. Now if you do the update it won't matter if you have a retail or OEM except how you do a reinstall. That hasn't been communicated to users yet.

So to finalize MS hasn't announced how you will do a clean install for either OEM or Retail. The way they do things will change and those changes haven't been communicated.
