Windows 10: What exactly transfers from Windows 7 to Windows 10 after Download.

Never heard of a 'System Image' though by the name I can tell what it is. I have my laptop set to
do auto backups at least once a week. Would that cover it in case this W10 download heads South?

What is a System Image? Is it hard to do? Are we getting off track from this forum? Suppose it still all
has to do with the W10 download issues as I would imagine the majority of users that will get
involved in loading up W10 aren't that computer savvy, like me.

 

I would recommend heading over to the sevenforums.com, and posting a query there about what is a System Image and how to make one. Suffice it to say, if you have a system image stored on an external drive, you can totally restore your system from that image, apps, data, configuration, tweaks, and all. But it is a different thread, I think.

Great! Yes, you have some time to do your homework. But making a System Image is something you ought to know how to do, and great big external drives are not expensive at all, and you can back up everything, and often. I'm an inveterate tester of OS'es, but I don't worry about it at all, beccause I know I can completely restore my system at any time.

Since we were talking earlier about doing a System Image before W10 gets downloaded, I've
found my older Toshiba 500GB external hard drive. Is 500GB of storage enough to do a complete
System Image?

This is just a home computer with normal doc files and probably compared to a lot
of users, not that many photos, no videos. Should I keep this 500G Toshiba - I think some people
are buying 2-4TB's of hard drive storage - that's alot of storage that probably only sees 10% useage
for the regular home use laptops. On my C drive, I have 598GB 'free' of 673GB available space.

It only affect windows system files.

 

Your old Toshiba ought to be fine. But HUGE external drives are available for not much money. I have a 1 TB drive that I use for nothing but backups. The more drive space, the more backups you can keep on hand, should you need to fall back.

 

There is a folder in your user profile Example: C:\Users\Your Login Profile (which is your username)

There are folders where

1. Favorites are located that are used with IE.
2. Desktop that stores you properties of your shortcuts
3. My Documents, My Pictures, My music and my videos.

I believe it was with beginning with Windows 7 libraries were created. Libraries allow you to organize sat pictures in separate folders (Ex Family, work , friends) but when you add them to a library they all are viewed together.
