Windows 10: What Fresh Hell Is This Re: MS Version 1709??

When I plugged in and booted up this morning I was greeted with this "Your Device Needs The Latest Security Updates."

I have been on 1703 (win 10 pro) since I got the machine in early Dec. The culprit that started this unwanted and unstoppable upgrade appears to be KB 4023057 and Windows10UpgraderApp.exe and a C:\Windows10Upgrade folder that miraculously appeared this morning.
I actually thought this update was just going to be some kind of 30 day security roll up. But uh-uh.
I know that MS has recently "moved the 1709 Fall Creators Update to full availability, signaling that the company believes it to be ready for corporate deployments" however I thought that I had this covered according to my update settings and that I still had quite a bit of time before this would be installed:

I have not explored yet to see what "damage" has been inflicted on me as yet other then to notice a new icon in my task bar that says "People."
I hate people.
I have read in more then one article that while it may not be universal opinion nevertheless 1709 is still somewhat "buggy."
Now what? Can I go back and uninstall it if I want to?

I have some restore points but I am not sure that would do the trick. I did image the drive last week so I can restore that image if I wanted to. But then what? Can I just disable Windows10UpgraderApp.exe somewhere or and or turn off updates all together? TIA.

I'm afraid Microsoft are getting pretty aggresive with wanting people to upgrade to Windows 10. If you delete or hide the updates Microsoft will just resend them to you're PC again and again and again and again. Sometimes they change the KB numbers
as well.

I have Windows 7. I was intending to upgrade to Windows 10 before all the privacy implications of Windows 10 became apparent.

As a result, I uninstalled the "recommended" update that puts Win10 on my machine, and "hid" the update in Windows Update.

I also noticed that Microsoft went and installed several "security" patches that were actually telemetry updates, and went through the same process with them.

As of today, I find that Microsoft has gone ahead and re-installed all these patches, along with the Win10 nagware again.

WHAT THE HELL. If I wanted Win10, I would ask for it. I own this machine, not you!

Anyway, can anyone suggest a more permanent removal process? Also, to which poor soul should I direct my feedback on this behavior?

 

Hi, if you have indeed now received build 1709 and it has been installed successfully, first let me congratulate you on a significant success. For some, that is a significant hurdle, so despite the issues you mention, consider it an achievement.

1. Old restore points after a build upgrade are totally irrelevant and are no longer present, as they have no meaning given the new set of files, drivers and registry settings (in some cases) you now have.
2. System restore is turned off after each build upgrade. (Why? -ask MS...).
3. You can 'Go back to the previous build' within 10 days after the upgrade. (That's why Windows.old is there, for example, and automatically deleted).

4. You can easily get rid of the People icon.

As you now have 1709, best see if it's ok... a few experience lag and latency problems with new drivers, for example.

You evidently have Pro (not Home anyway); an excellent way to add a bit more defence against unexpected upgrades is to set updates to Notify.

I haven't found 1709 to be particularly buggy or prone to crashing. But people's experience with different mixes of hardware and software may differ of course.

You can find posts on how to disable updates altogether. That can be appropriate in a few cases- e.g. where the upgrade repeatedly fails and makes using the PC nigh impossible- but cannot be recommended.

Of course, one could always elect to live in a Faraday cage too....

If I go back what measures can I take to forestall 1709? I thought I had it covered.

So if I go back can I hide KB 4023057? If I go back can I even hide an update that has not been downloaded? so it does not download again? and what about the unwanted Windows10UpgraderApp.exe that mysteriously popped up this morning. How do I make sure I do not get that downloaded again?

Two updates, KB4023814 and KB4023057 are responsible for that. The Upgrade Assistant isn't actually being downloaded each time - the install files are hidden on your PC and there are scheduled tasks to reinstall it should you try to uninstall it the conventional way. Other scheduled tasks run it at boot and daily at a set time.

Yes, but you have to wait for the update to be offered again, but not let it download. Set a metered connection to prevent the download starting when windows update checks for updates. That give you a chance to hide it, after which you should reboot. After that you can turn off metered connections, if you like.

Since fall was a half a year ago I'm curious how long you thought you could hold it off.

Also have you tried running apps to see that it works ok? Most people have no problems with the update. That's why they give you 10 days to roll back.

Rolling back can be dangerous as well. Why fix it if it ain't broke?

 

I got it too on my Z170, it`s March, it`s the time security updates would end on 1703, my update went perfectly.

When It was done, the only thing I had to change was my background color back to black and of course delete the windows.old folder, I made a fresh image of 1703 last night.

Must have none it was coming *Shock

I already clean installed 1709 on the X299 so this is no big deal, I can't even see a difference *Smile

Just leave it, it`s fine.

 

I guess I can GOOGLE this but since you brought it up do you have any anecdotal evidence or links regarding the perils of rolling back?

 

Why do you want to roll back, you will no longer get any security updates if you do.

Just use your image and don`t install the updates if you want to go back to 1703.

 

Do you know according to recent surveys 90% of pcs in US and EU are on FCU, and 85% worldwide.

It is rather defeatist basing your opinions on forum posts as people only post when they get issues. People (that word you hate) rarely post to say things are good, so you end up with a jaundiced view.

Next, the lament that the cuurent build is buggy is so tedious really as you get the same lament after very build upgrade.

Staying on an old version is ultimately a bad plan as builds only have a life of 18 months before support ceases with 1607 stopping shortly.

You say 'I have not examined yet to what damage has been inflicted" but you post on the ASSUMPTION that you will have issues. The thing is you should never ASSUME anything because if you get it wrong it can make an ASS of U and ME!

The intelligent approach to build upgrades is to make an image backup, upgrade and try it, knowing you can safely revert if you get any significant issues.

 

Yes, I have been running 1709 for several months now with no issue that was not easily fixed. I did, however, download the update from Catalog and manually ran on all 3 of my computer, the only real issues I have were with my P2P network Some services were turned off that needed to be restarted it did take a couple of days to sort all that out. I think most of the issues that arose were sorted out fairly quickly here in this forum. So if you have issues, the answers are probably here to help you solve them. if not there is a large group of very switched on people here to give you a hand.
