Windows 10: What I want in an OS

Discus and support What I want in an OS in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; I'd be surprised if MS doesn't monitor a lot of forums and places that deal or at lest mention windows and specifically 10. What I want in an OS

I'm not sure that's entirely true. I believe that MS, and any savvy corporation, can and should keep track of EVERY site that mentions their name, much less one that holds full-out discussions about it's product(s). Sure, it's alot of resource to throw out there, but the corp needs to continue making $$. The only way to accurately get feedback is to hear the customer at the street level. What are they telling their neighbors about the corp's product? etc... It just happens that our "street" is electronic and YOU are my neighbor.

As far as participation in these forums, I'm glad that MS doesn't officially have a presence here (or in Seven Forums, etc...). If I want to talk to them directly, they have a web interface. The difference is, the people here help because they WANT to be here. If MS made an appearance here, the person on the other end of that connection would be here because they would HAVE to be. It changes the quality of the answers and opinions, in my view. Oh, without a doubt, but even in these forums it would take a full timer whose only job was to go through them. And this is one of the more organized sites.

Hey, MVPs . . . wanna chime in and tell us what you know about Microsoft checking out the various Windows websites?

I'm glad Microsoft doesn't have an official presence here too. Since I use HP computers for the most part, I'm a member of their forums, and those things are just too complicated for me. *Sad And those who answer questions sometimes get a little snotty, for want of a better word. I was an mvp for 6 yrs only time I know of them looking here and other forums was once a year at renewal time, when they checked out how good I was doing .

  5. I don't agree with this.

The Linux GUIs I've used (GNOME2, KDE3? & MATE) are much closer to Windows, than the Mac GUI is.
Most of the "common" keyboard shortcuts are identical in Linux Distros too ("Undo" "Redo" is an exception).

What I want in an OS

I don't have Win10 installed. So I cannot suggest per the normal Win10 channel. *Think Just using Win8.1 on a (new) tablet.

Something I noticed that I hope is already resolved in Win10.... Charms bar | Settings | PC Settings

It would be better if All PC controls are in one location. Not some on the Charms bar, some in PC settings, and most in Control Panel.

    Thanks..

Yes, it would be better, and no it's not going to happen. The conversion from Control Panel to settings is going to be a long slow process over many versions of Windows (could be 10 years or more).

I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 MATE (64 bit).

XFCE is another DE that is supposed to be similar to Windows.

GNOME3 and the newer versions of KDE are somewhere between W7 and W10.
For example, the multiple desktops in W10 seem to be similar to Activities (KDE) and Workspaces (GNOME3).

I think that jimbo45 said he uses KDE.
You could ask him about it. *Smile

You should take into account that IMO:
    • The Windows GUI tools are ~80% to ~90% finished
    • The Linux GUI tools are ~50% to ~60% finished

If you put @jimbo45 rather than just jimbo45 it shows up in his mentions and he will be notified. This is a nice (and perhaps new) feature in the forum.

I use KDE plasma. I tried a few and it was the prettiest for me. It doesn't deal particularly well with high DPI screens but then nor does anything else. I have 2 Macbook Pro (One running TP only, one dual boot Arch and OSX) and an old Lenovo X201. Neither OSX, Windows nor Linux will deal with high DPI perfectly. You always run into some program that defines things in terms of pixels and makes it unreadably small no matter what you do.

Personally I think Windows GUI is the easiest to use but possibly only because I use it more often.

I thought that if caperjack was interested he could message jimbo45.

    Agreed.

I use W7 for ~95% of my computer activities. *Smile

  13. What I want in an OS

The problem is not everyone defines what the essentials of the OS are the same. Example is the device manager part of the OS? Well you can download a 3rd part option if you wish but most people would say it's part of the OS. How about a browser? How can you download other browser if you don't have one in the first place. So may when you purchase you get the browser of your choice that they can install for 25 to 40 dollars. Most people love to be able to watch videos or play music in Windows out of the box. I don't care less what MS puts in their OS if theirs works fine I will use if not i download something I like better and never realize the MS's tool even exists. These tools take up little space and typically aren't running at startup. So I can delete shortcuts and remove from startup if they do and I'm good to go.

    What orlbuckeye said....*Smile

    Advantages and Disadvantages....

The big disadvantage is like people mentioned- there will be applications that many people do not realize that are out there, or realize that they even need. Some examples are the .zip file uncompression program, DVD playback (as mentioned above), photo-display programs - which are now built into Windows. People may go out and purchase a third-party tools unnecessarily.

Another potential bomb is cost. I can see apps for an OS being sold very easily. That would not be good.

There is one or possibly two advantages to selling an OS in kernel seed-form originally- It will probably be installable onto a USB, to enable it to be bootable.

Scalability would be interesting. A student can purchase a 'bare-bones' stripped-down version of an OS. While the deluxe version would start out to be the exact same stripped-down version, but with more bells and whistles added/purchased later on. The only thing that you probably will not be able to switch later on would be 32Bit/64Bit.

The other advantage would be a small speed improvement. How you ask? Just because of virtue of it's decreased size. For example file indexing would not have to work so hard- giving more resources for user-apps. The registry will not be so huge probably, making it faster to read from. Any antivirus program would benefit for the same reason.

p.s. Sorry for my interjecting my suggestion earlier in this thread. If someone feels compelled- please suggest it to MS. You can say that it's your idea. I don't care about that.

"Just click on the Windows Feedback icon in the Start menu, then tell them what you just told us. As Jeff said, if enough of us ask for it, we may just get it."

and then one has to sign in on a MS account and everything gets changed on your computer.....

I have had that and do not want it back to happen Wynona....

Me i want the Charms back and those not wanting it, do not have to use it, right?

About a year ago i suggested here to have some 50 options (or more) to personalise your OS at install time. Then everyone would have what he wants.
