What Is A GPT Style Disk And What to do about it?

I just got a system crash today.

    Win10.

Will not boot. Can't repair. Did chkdsk and it is fine. Tried everything. Nothing works.

Went to install a new Win10 and I get a message: Can't install on that disk because it is partition style GPT.

Never heard of such a thing. And that's the disk that the existing win10 is installed on.

This doesn't make sense to me.

Anyone got any ideas could perhaps help me with this?

    :)

Getting error: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style

I am trying to reinstall Windows 10 on my friends machine from bootable USB. Following is what I have done till now:

    • I created bootable USB using Windows 10 ISO and Rufus with GPT Partition schema for UEFI computer option selected. Also I ensured that I formatted it with FAT32.

    • Machine was not detecting bootable USB drive. All it was showing in its boot menu is this:

      So I enabled legacy mode:

and it started showing bootable USB drive in its boot menu:

    • So I continued to installing Windows 10. However when selected partition in which Windows 8 was installed, it said Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
That means partition in which Windows 8 is installed is of type of GPT type. Also my bootable USB drive is of GPT type. Then, why it is not allowing to install?

    Cannot convert GPT to MBR.

    Hi Michael,

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

This method you have to backup all your data and delete all partitions and volumes. Then use the
    DISKPART command.

    • Open command prompt and type in DISKPART and press Enter
    • Then type in list disk (Note down the number of disk you want to convert to GPT)
    • Then type in select disk number of disk
    • Finally type in convert gpt.
Hope the information helps. Do reply if you need further assistance.
