Windows 10: What is a smart card device and why does it interfere with support?

I’m not too tech savvy but my computer randomly started giving me the activate windows watermark at the bottom right and I tried speaking to support, he was going to try and access my computer to see what could be done but when he tried to connect I allowed it and while connecting it kept asking me to select a smart card device, i’m not sure why but i couldn’t continue past that point without selecting one… and we even tried the website, just sat on the connecting screen… i’m not sure what to do and what a smart card device is

Connect a smart card

Thank you Yasir; I read the content in the link provided; the problem I have now is not to ask for smart card when log on but to connect a smart card when update applications. Do you have a suggestion for that?
