  2. What is causing Xbox to trigger infinite GamingServices and Xbox Identity Provider updates, causing game crashes?

    Hello,

I've been having major issues playing Chivalry 2 specifically through the Xbox app on PC. I'm experiencing game crashes (the game just automatically closes but the PC remains fine) and I've narrowed down the issue to Microsoft trying to update GamingServices and Xbox Identity Provider and/or the Microsoft Store during play.

Whenever GamingServices and Xbox Identity Provider start updating, I can see in the Xbox app the GamePass games disappearing from my Library, and re-appearing when the update has "completed". Whenever Chivalry 2 crashes (bought/downloaded via the GamePass), I see a spike in wsappx and GamingServices in Task Manager.

I am also seeing this error in Event Viewer, which I believe may be related: DCOM got error "87" attempting to start the service GamingServices with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:

    {3E8C9ABE-9226-4609-BF5B-60288A391DEE}

When I have the Xbox app closed, Microsoft Store will update everything once. When I open the Xbox app, the Microsoft Store will begin to "spam" updating GamingServices and Xbox Identity Provider. The update completes, it disappears from the update list, and reappears a couple of seconds later. There is no end to the updates and with every update it closes active GamePass games. The Xbox Game Bar also keeps infinitely updating for some reason as well once it has been opened. I do not have any issues with other apps updating.

Looking at Security and Maintenance, I'm not seeing any installation errors or notifications.

I'm confident at this point it is not a third part app or program causing issues as I've disabled all apps from running on startup. No issues whatsoever with other modern games and this is only affecting games running through the Windows 10 Xbox App.

Here is what I've tried so far without any success:

    • Disabling Firewall
    • Running the game as Admin
    • Repairing and Resetting the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, GamingServices, etc.
    • Uninstalling and re-installing GamingServices
    • All Drivers completely updated
    • All Windows Apps and Programs Fully Updated
    • Clean boot with no third party programs
    • Repairing DISM with DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth with a successful outcome
    • sfc /scannow with a result of no integrity violations.
    • Clearing the store cache with wsreset.exe
    • Logging out and Logging into the store
    System Information

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

    Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as at this point I have no idea what could be causing this. I have no issues updating Windows 10 itself.

What is causing Xbox to trigger infinite GamingServices and Xbox Identity Provider updates, causing game crashes?

    Hi Greg,

    1) Try resetting Xbox at Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Xbox Live > Advanced Options > Repair and Reset. Restart PC, test again.

    This did not work.

    2) If that fails try re-registering all Xbox apps from Option Two here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...
Re-registering is different and will often fix what a Reset or Reinstall will not.

    This did not work.

    3) If that fails try uninstalling Xbox apps from Settings location above, restart PC, then reinstall from MS Store app Settings > My Library.

    This did not work.

    4) If those don't help then go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

This did not work. Virus scans show no issues.

    5) If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

    This did not work.

I hope this helps. Based on what you report back I can answer any questions and may have other steps to perform. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

I want to stress that this issue seems to be affecting ALL Microsoft store apps. Clicking "Get Updates" in the store updates most apps. Clicking it again causes all the same apps to update yet again. Opening the Xbox App or Xbox Overlay app trigger updates for those apps as well. Is my installer corrupted or something? I've already run the Troubleshooting tools many times.
