Windows 10: What is new for Microsoft To-Do in October 2018

From Ignite in Orlando to the Microsoft Event in New York City it’s been an exciting month for Microsoft To-Do. We shared how To-Do can be used to better manage all your tasks across work and life, as well as previewed the latest updates and integrations coming to the app very soon.So, without much further ado here’s a recap of the latest To-Do news.

To-Do integrations across Microsoft 365

Turn emails into tasks
We’re extremely excited to unveil the new integration of Microsoft To-Do in Outlook.com and Outlook on the web. While in your inbox, open the tasks pane and drag and drop emails to it on the right-hand side to create a task. This task will sync to Microsoft To-Do with the associated email linked for reference. Now you don’t have to leave Outlook to create a task manually, and you’ll have the email to reference right in the task notes!

Complete more of your daily tasks by seamlessly dragging tasks to block off time in your calendar. In the Outlook.com and Outlook on the web calendar view, open the tasks pane on the top right-hand corner to view your tasks. Drag and drop a task from the pane onto your calendar to block off time in your day to complete it. Scheduling a time to complete daily tasks adds a layer of intention to your day, so that you can be feel more focused and productive.

This integration will be coming first to Outlook.com starting in November 2018 followed by Outlook on the web starting in December 2018.

Flag an email, create a task in To-Do
We have heard your feedback and are happy to announce the integration of flagged emails in Outlook and To-Do. Once you flag an email in Outlook, it will automatically create a task in To-Do, under a separate flagged emails list. Since we understand that not all users utilize flagged emails as tasks, this feature will be opt-in only from your To-Do settings.

This integration will be rolling out across Outlook (including older versions for Windows)starting in December 2018.

Create tasks in conversations
Never lose track of that thing you said you’d do in Skype conversations. Select the message in the conversation and click “Create a task” to open the tasks pane to add, edit and mark tasks as complete. Tasks created on Skype will be available in Skype and the To-Do app.

The Skype and To-Do integration is available on Skype for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android today.

Feature highlights from Microsoft To-Do

Dark Mode is now available on Android and Windows across all your lists. Head over to the app settings and switch to dark theme to enjoy Microsoft To-Do in dark mode.

Inking in To-Do
Inking is supported on To-Do on Windows! Create and complete tasks using the power of ink today.

Get InTune for To-Do now
InTune in Microsoft To-Do is now generally available. With this new update, you can use mobile app management and conditional access with To-Do for Android and iOS devices. For more information on enabling this feature, visit aka.ms/ToDoIntune.

Add Importance to your tasks
You can now add importance to your tasks and mark any task as high priority. Tasks marked with the blue star will be aggregated into and “Important” list and the designation will be carried over across other lists, such as My Day.

Please note the following information regarding the security updates:

Customers runnning Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 need to ensure they have Servicing Stack Update (SSU) 3177467 installed before installing the October 2018 security updates, to avoid a failure to install. See

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 3177467 for more information about this SSU.

Windows 10 updates are cumulative. The monthly security release includes all security fixes for vulnerabilities that affect Windows 10, in addition to non-security updates. The updates are available via the

Microsoft Update Catalog.

Starting in March 2017, a delta package will be available on the Microsoft Update Catalog for Windows 10 version 1607 and newer. This delta package contains just the delta changes between the previous month and the current release.

Updates for Windows RT 8.1 and Microsoft Office RT software are only available via

Windows Update.

Start developing on Windows 10 October 2018 Update today

We’re excited to announce that the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (build 17763) and SDK is now available. You may also know this as Windows 10, version 1809.

New APIs and Features for developers

Every update of Windows 10 is loaded with new APIs but don’t worry, Windows Dev Center has a full list of what is new for developers. Here are a few of my favorites.

WinUI Library: This is the way to get new controls! We are shipping new controls out-of-band such as Menu Bar and Navigation View. Head to https://www.nuget.org/packages/Microsoft.UI.Xaml for the latest package.

Density UI improvements: We’re making the default spacing and sizing about 20% tighter compared to the old standard.

MSIX packaging tool: The new packaging tool also makes upgrading existing applications a breeze to the new packaging format. It works both in an interactive UI or commandline! If you want to learn more about MSIX, head over to Docs.

Update your dev environment in two simple steps

Update your system to Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Get Visual Studio 2017 with the updated tooling and Windows 10 SDK.

How to update your device to Windows 10 October 2018 Update

There are multiple ways you can update, but the easiest way is to go to Windows Update in your settings and click “check for updates.” It’s that simple!

Acquire the Windows 10 SDK and Visual Studio 2017

Now that your system is on Windows 10 October 2018 Update, install Visual Studio and the new SDK.

Currently with Visual Studio 2017, version 15.8:

Run the installer or go to Downloads | IDE, Code, & Team Foundation Server | Visual Studio and download it.

Go to “Individual Components”

Go to “SDKs, libraries, and frameworks” section

Check “Windows 10 SDK (10.0.17763)”

Click “Install”

In the near future with Visual Studio 2017, version 15.9:

Run the installer or go to https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/ and download it.

Select “Universal Windows Platform development” under Workloads, Windows 10 SDK (10.0.17763) will be included by default

Click “Install.”

More useful tips

Do you want tools for C++ desktop or game development for UWP? Be sure one of these two are selected:

C++ Universal Windows Platform tools in the UWP Workload section

Desktop development with C++ Workload and the Windows SDK 10 (10.0.17763)

If you want the Universal Windows Platform tools:

Select the Universal Windows Platform tools workload.

Once your systems are updated and recompiled and your app is tested, submit your app to Dev Center.
