Windows 10: What is New in Microsoft Teams for September 2019

Many of us are heading back to school or returning to work after a relaxing Summer break; but while you may have been on vacation, momentum in Teams has not slowed down! We are excited to share a ton of new features that have come to Microsoft Teams in the past month of September, from improvements to the calling experience to new, intuitive ways to filter your chats.

What’s New: Chat & Collaboration

Get your message across with channel cross posting
Do you need to share information with multiple teams simultaneously? You can now make sure your message gets to everyone who needs to be in the know, by posting a message to multiple channels in a single step. Channels can be a part of the same team or a different one. And because everyone makes mistakes, any edits that you make to the post will be reflected across all channels. Learn more here.

Filter through your chats
Having many simultaneous conversations is the norm in today’s work and social culture but can make finding the right thread at the right time difficult. The new filters added in Chat and Teams help you filter more than just your activity. In chat, type a person’s name to filter for every group, meeting, or one-on-one chat you have with them. Then select More options to add more filters – like unread messages. Or type a keyword to filter by group chats that have names. Similarly, filter your teams list by typing a keyword to find a specific team or channel by name.

Turn down the noise in channels
Shh! I need to concentrate. Now, just like in chat, you can mute a conversation in a channel. Alternatively, when you want to follow a conversation in a channel you’ve hidden from your list, all you need to do is turn on notifications. You’ll get notified of any activity on that specific conversation, but not the entire channel activity.

To access the notification settings for a conversation, go to the original post and select More options > Turn off notifications/Turn on notifications

What’s New: Calling

Never miss a phone call with Secondary Ringer
Many Teams users wear headsets during their working day to keep their hands free and take phone calls. With secondary ringer functionality, those wearing plugged in headsets will still be able to hear an incoming call ring their computer. This is a crucial feature that helps Teams users to not miss any incoming calls.

Enhancements to Cloud Voicemail
Several updates have come this month to improving your Cloud Voicemail experience. First, users will now be able to directly transfer a call to Cloud Voicemail. And several enhancements enable end users to directly configure features themselves in the Teams settings options, including: configuring call answer rules, choosing the greeting language, customizing the TTS for the standard greeting and the ‘out of office’ greeting, and choosing when you want your ‘out of office’ greeting to be played. Know who is calling, even when they are not a Teams user using reverse number look up
“Hello?” Vs. “Hello!” We are all used to “caller ID”, where we are shown the identity of our caller before we answer the phone. But if you receive a call in Teams from a PSTN Caller, how do you know who is trying to reach you? Now, when a user receives a call, Teams will display the PSTN Caller’s name based on Azure Active Directory data and/or the Telco provided display name. Available now on the desktop, and coming soon to Teams mobile.

Chrome now has calling!
If you’re using Teams on the web, you can now add Google Chrome to your list of browsers that support making calls from your web browser. If you’re on Chrome, try it out today. Go to Calls on the left side of Teams, or type /call in the command bar at the very top of Teams.

Phone System updates for Microsoft 365 GCC (Government Community Cloud)
Several updates have made their way to Microsoft 365 GCC this month! New capabilities include: Call Handling Enhancements, Teams Calling improvements for VOIP users, Group Call Pickup (GCP), phone number blocking, Multiparty Calling without Conference License, Call Park (CP), and Shared Line Appearance (SLA). Together, these features represent a significant milestone in how calls are handled by Microsoft Teams for GCC users. Learn more here.

What’s New: Meetings

Meet Now. No invite required.
Not all meetings can be scheduled in advance; some happen spontaneously. The “Meet Now” feature on desktop allows you to skip the invitation and instead go straight to in a new meeting. All you need to do is go to Calendar on the left side of Teams, then select Meet now in the top right corner and add the people to the meeting. No calendar, no scheduling, no fuss. Learn more here.

Customize your meeting layout by pinning a meeting participant
The default layout for Teams meetings highlight meeting participants in a traditional 2x2 layout, with the most active speakers taking priority. Now with “pin” you can choose which meeting attendees are shown in your own personal view. Right-click on a meeting participant and select “pin” (or unpin) to create your own custom layout of meeting participants. Note that this view is your own and does not impact other meeting participants.

Never miss a meeting with “missed meeting-add” notifications
We all miss phone calls occasionally and when we do, we receive a notification that lets us know who was trying to call. But what if someone tries to add us to a meeting, and we miss the notification? Now you will see a notification in your Teams activity feed to notify that someone tried to add you to a meeting, and if the meeting is still going on you can join directly from there.

Light-weight meeting join experience for Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox
While the best Teams Meetings experiences happen in the Teams application and supported Edge and Chrome browsers, there are times when meeting participant’s machines may not meet these requirements. With new light-weight meeting join capabilities, users can jump right into a Teams Meeting in Internet Explorer 11, Safari, and Firefox browsers and participate in the meeting. Meeting audio is delivered via Audio Conferencing, so meeting organizers will need the respective license.

What is New in Microsoft Teams in April 2019

In case you missed it… here is a round of up of what’s new with Microsoft Teams in the past month.

Microsoft Teams on Surface Hub

Microsoft Whiteboard is available in Teams in commercial preview
Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams meetings empowers meeting attendees from the same tenant to participate in the conversation regardless of the device you use or where you are. Whether joining from the meeting room or remotely, you can start a new board in the Teams meeting (currently supported on desktop, web and Surface Hub – coming soon to mobile). The board is automatically shared with meeting attendees. Users can ink together in real-time on the board.  On Surface Hub, users can launch the native Whiteboard app to enable an even richer collaboration experience with features such as sticky notes, images, and gridlines.  To enable Whiteboard in Teams meetings on Surface Hub, please turn on feature here.

Switch cameras automatically
Microsoft Teams on Surface Hub now supports switching cameras automatically. The camera will use motion and face detection to focus on who’s talking.

Introducing Praise
Who’s awesome? You’re awesome.

Introducing Praise, the new way to show your appreciation and encourage each other at work. Send in a 1:1 chat or post it to a channel for the entire team. Select *** below the compose box, then select Praise at the top. Choose what kind of badge you wish to send and personalize your acknowledgment with a message. When you send it, we'll @mention them in the message to make sure they don't miss it. Learn more here.

Request to add others to teams
Now you can request on behalf of someone else to join a private team. Teams can be created as either private, where admins control membership, or public, where anyone in the organization is welcome to join. Right-click on a team name, and select Add member. Search for people by name or email. Team owners will get a notification that they have a new request, and people you've added will get a notification once they've been added to the team.

Org-wide teams now have larger size limits
Org-wide teams have higher size limits, so they can have up to 5000 members in a team. Admins, feel free to add away! Create that big team you've always wanted. Learn more on our admin help page.

Show and hide teams to stay organized
We are making it easier for you keep an uncluttered teams list. What used to be Favorite and Remove from favorites is now Show and Hide. Choose which teams and channels you want to show in your teams list and hide the rest. You'll still get notified when @mentioned, they just won't clutter your teams list.

To try it out, go to a team or channel name in your teams list and select More options ***> Hide. Want to get a team back in your list? Scroll to the bottom and open the Hidden teams list.

Microsoft Teams PowerShell Module General Availability
We are excited to announce the general availability of the Microsoft Teams PowerShell module. This PowerShell module allows you to manage the lifecycle of teams within your organization. For more detail and guidance, see our recent blog post.

Make Teams available to all users at your organization

We have made it easier than ever to get started on Teams, with the Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial!
How does this trial work? Users who have an AAD Commercial domain or an Office 365 license that does not include Teams, can still use Teams with their work email address. The Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial is a fully functional version of Microsoft Teams valid for one- year per tenant The trial is applicable even if the user does not have Microsoft Teams license and can include up to 500,000 users per tenant, with 2 GB of SharePoint Online storage per user.

How does a user sign up for this trial? Eligible users can sign up for the trial offer by logging into Teams here. Simply enter your organization’s credentials/email and you’ll be automatically routed into the trial experience.

How do I manage this? Office 365 admins have several ways to monitor and control Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trials in their organization: they can disable the use of trials, convert trials into assigned licenses, and upgrade to an Office 365 SKU with Microsoft Teams. As of May 2019, we are making it easier to manage all end-user initiated Teams trials. All of the Teams trials started by company users will be owned and controlled by the billing admin of the tenant, making it easy to manage and consistent with the other Microsoft 365 offers. Any existing Teams Trial licenses will be migrated to this new license when the associated users log into Teams in near future. Once this support is rolled out, users will be migrated automatically the next time they log into Teams. No admin actions are required. Learn more about Commercial Cloud Trial management.

New Teams

Hi,

With regard to your concern, you can add a new team on Cortana by following the steps below:

Click Cortana or the circle icon.

Click the Notebook icon, scroll down and click Sports.

Click Add a team and start typing the name of a team.

Select the results.

Note: If the the team does not show up in the list you cannot add it to the Notebook. We suggest that you send a feedback using Windows Feedback hub so we can take note of this feature for future updates.

Please note the following information regarding the security updates:

A list of the latest servicing stack updates for each operating system can be found in ADV990001. This list will be updated whenever
a new servicing stack update is released. It is important to install the latest servicing stack update.

Windows 10 updates are cumulative. The monthly security release includes all security fixes for vulnerabilities that affect Windows 10, in addition to non-security updates. The updates are available via the Microsoft
Update Catalog.

Updates for Windows RT 8.1 and Microsoft Office RT software are only available via Windows Update.

For information on lifecycle and support dates for Windows 10 operating systems, please see Windows Lifecycle Facts Sheet.

In addition to security changes for the vulnerabilities, updates include defense-in-depth updates to help improve security-related features.
