Windows 10: What is New in Microsoft Teams May 2019

In addition to the announcements that you may have seen from Build Conference, several other features became available this past month of May in Teams!

Find a nearby meeting room easily with proximity-based meeting join in Teams

You know that frantic feeling when you need to find an available conference room at the last minute to take a meeting? Those days are over! Proximity-based meeting join for Microsoft Teams Rooms is now available. This means that the Teams app on your desktop or mobile phone will find a Teams-enabled room for you to use that is nearby and available.

Once inside your chosen meeting room, the front of the room display and console will show your meeting invitation. Simply accept the incoming invitation on the console to bring the room into the meeting.

Microsoft Teams will automatically join the meeting in content-only mode from your desktop, allowing the room to provide audio and video into the meeting without echo and feedback generated by the other devices in the room. 

This functionality is now available for your desktop and mobile clients, and will start working automatically.

On your PC the pre-join screen of your meeting will highlight that a Teams Room is nearby.

Let callers know when you are already on the phone with Busy on Busy signal

Can I call you back? Busy on Busy is a feature that allows callers to know a user's status when contacting them. When a call comes into a user who is already engaged in a call or meeting, this setting alerts the calling party that the user is on another call by playing a busy signal. This feature is automatically available in your Teams experience.

Make calls directly from Teams with the new Calls App

Users that have Voice over IP (VOIP) enabled will now see the Calls App in the App bar in the Desktop and Web Clients. Additionally, we will be turning on voicemail for these users after we complete roll out of the calls app. There is no change in functionality for existing users or their calling policy configuration.

Share read-only materials with your students in the new Class Materials folder

Want to share files with your students but don’t want their creative edits on the material? Use the new Class Materials folder in the General channel of Microsoft Teams for Education.This is a great way to share documents or reference materials like syllabi, school rules, and reference materials with the class. This ‘Class Materials’ folder is read-only by default. Learn more here.

Multi-team support for Firstline workers who are on more than one team

Many Firstline Workers work on more than one team, and now with multi-team support in Shifts, employees will be able to access their shifts, other user's shifts, requests, open shifts, their profile, other user's profiles in a multi-team manner. This feature will save them both time and potentially data usage if they are switching teams often.

You already live on your phone, so now manage Teams on your phone

Manage your team and add new members straight from the Teams app on your phone. Invite guests from outside your organization via their email address using your mobile app (). In the Teams list, tap the “…” next to the team name > “Manage members” > Add person icon on the top right and enter their email address to invite them to the team.

Always be on time for your meetings with “Meeting started” notifications on your phone

You’ll be the most punctual member of the team now that you will receive “meeting started” notifications on your phone when someone joins a Teams meeting on your calendar. You can join the meeting right from the notification, and skip searching for the correct meeting in your calendar. As with any notification, it will not appear if you are active on desktop or during quiet hours.

Join meetings the way that works for you with “Call me”

Have the meeting call YOU! You can now join meetings through a “Call me” functionality both from pre-join screen and during the meeting. To use this feature, you need to provide a phone number where you can receive a phone call. If the call is accepted, your meeting audio will switch to the cellular connection. Your personal and work phone numbers, if added to your account, will be available for selection automatically.

Work with your Teams usage reports the way you want by exporting them from the Teams admin center

You can now export Teams usage reports to CSV files for offline analysis. After selecting a report in the Analytics and reports section of the Microsoft Teams admin center, click Export to Excel, and then on the Downloads tab, click Download to download the report when it's ready.

What is New in Microsoft Teams in April 2019

In case you missed it… here is a round of up of what’s new with Microsoft Teams in the past month.

Microsoft Teams on Surface Hub

Microsoft Whiteboard is available in Teams in commercial preview
Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams meetings empowers meeting attendees from the same tenant to participate in the conversation regardless of the device you use or where you are. Whether joining from the meeting room or remotely, you can start a new board in the Teams meeting (currently supported on desktop, web and Surface Hub – coming soon to mobile). The board is automatically shared with meeting attendees. Users can ink together in real-time on the board.  On Surface Hub, users can launch the native Whiteboard app to enable an even richer collaboration experience with features such as sticky notes, images, and gridlines.  To enable Whiteboard in Teams meetings on Surface Hub, please turn on feature here.

Switch cameras automatically
Microsoft Teams on Surface Hub now supports switching cameras automatically. The camera will use motion and face detection to focus on who’s talking.

Introducing Praise
Who’s awesome? You’re awesome.

Introducing Praise, the new way to show your appreciation and encourage each other at work. Send in a 1:1 chat or post it to a channel for the entire team. Select *** below the compose box, then select Praise at the top. Choose what kind of badge you wish to send and personalize your acknowledgment with a message. When you send it, we'll @mention them in the message to make sure they don't miss it. Learn more here.

Request to add others to teams
Now you can request on behalf of someone else to join a private team. Teams can be created as either private, where admins control membership, or public, where anyone in the organization is welcome to join. Right-click on a team name, and select Add member. Search for people by name or email. Team owners will get a notification that they have a new request, and people you've added will get a notification once they've been added to the team.

Org-wide teams now have larger size limits
Org-wide teams have higher size limits, so they can have up to 5000 members in a team. Admins, feel free to add away! Create that big team you've always wanted. Learn more on our admin help page.

Show and hide teams to stay organized
We are making it easier for you keep an uncluttered teams list. What used to be Favorite and Remove from favorites is now Show and Hide. Choose which teams and channels you want to show in your teams list and hide the rest. You'll still get notified when @mentioned, they just won't clutter your teams list.

To try it out, go to a team or channel name in your teams list and select More options ***> Hide. Want to get a team back in your list? Scroll to the bottom and open the Hidden teams list.

Microsoft Teams PowerShell Module General Availability
We are excited to announce the general availability of the Microsoft Teams PowerShell module. This PowerShell module allows you to manage the lifecycle of teams within your organization. For more detail and guidance, see our recent blog post.

Make Teams available to all users at your organization

We have made it easier than ever to get started on Teams, with the Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial!
How does this trial work? Users who have an AAD Commercial domain or an Office 365 license that does not include Teams, can still use Teams with their work email address. The Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial is a fully functional version of Microsoft Teams valid for one- year per tenant The trial is applicable even if the user does not have Microsoft Teams license and can include up to 500,000 users per tenant, with 2 GB of SharePoint Online storage per user.

How does a user sign up for this trial? Eligible users can sign up for the trial offer by logging into Teams here. Simply enter your organization’s credentials/email and you’ll be automatically routed into the trial experience.

How do I manage this? Office 365 admins have several ways to monitor and control Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trials in their organization: they can disable the use of trials, convert trials into assigned licenses, and upgrade to an Office 365 SKU with Microsoft Teams. As of May 2019, we are making it easier to manage all end-user initiated Teams trials. All of the Teams trials started by company users will be owned and controlled by the billing admin of the tenant, making it easy to manage and consistent with the other Microsoft 365 offers. Any existing Teams Trial licenses will be migrated to this new license when the associated users log into Teams in near future. Once this support is rolled out, users will be migrated automatically the next time they log into Teams. No admin actions are required. Learn more about Commercial Cloud Trial management.

New Teams

Hi,

With regard to your concern, you can add a new team on Cortana by following the steps below:

Click Cortana or the circle icon.

Click the Notebook icon, scroll down and click Sports.

Click Add a team and start typing the name of a team.

Select the results.

Note: If the the team does not show up in the list you cannot add it to the Notebook. We suggest that you send a feedback using Windows Feedback hub so we can take note of this feature for future updates.

Only supported on Win10. Sorry, 8.1 users, only 4 years old, gotta go.

Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Today we’re pleased to share the following updates:

Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.
