Windows 10: What is the Disk Space Requirement for Windows 10 Fall Update?

Hi, I have a Nextpad device that comes with Windows 10 installed on it. I did not yet install any user application on it, and the File Explorer reports that it has about 16G out of a total 28G disk space available. Now Windows Update has found the Windows 10 Fall Update and will try to download and install it, but I stopped it because I worry about the disk space.

So my question is: is the 16G free space enough? I know that the Fall Update install will try to back up the original Windows 10 first, and that will take a lot of disk space (my guess here is that the 12G space used is all used by the system and will be backed up, and that only leaves me 4G left, which might not even be enough for downloading the Fall Update). Even though I would be able to remove the previous Windows after a successful installation of Fall Update, I worry the update will fail (and leave the device in an unusable state) during the installation due to insufficient disk space.

So what should I do? I know I can insert a MicroSD card to increase the storage capacity, but numerous articles have indicated that the presence of such card will cause the Fall Update to stall and fail.

My disk has 20GB total space, so if I use a DVD to reinstall Windows, overwriting the older 8.1, it's as if the 20GB were free, making the installation possible, right?

 

Rather then allowing windows update to download the upgrade to your HDD ( uses about 5GB of space)
Download the windows 10 ISO > http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench
Right-click the ISO and burn to a removable USB drive..
Delete the ISO file or copy it to another location other then your small HDD
Now you can run the upgrade from the usb drive by running setup.exe

besides having the setup files on your small HDD, you would also need room for the windows.old folder..
So having the files on usb helps with needed space..

 

Thanks! But does this work for the Fall Update? I heard that Fall Update was once offered as ISO but later changed to be exclusively through Windows Update. Also, what is the edition I should choose from that page? Just "Windows 10"?

Yes that is the Fall Update ISO (once pulled, then restored)
And yes it would be "Winows 10" ISO - the ISO's contain both Home and Pro setup

well. it would be Windows 10 unless your edition is single language..

 

You can also just copy the ISO file to a Micro-SD card if your tablet has one. Right click on the ISO file on the Micro-SD card and select mount. Run setup.exe from the fake DVD drive that appears.

Not all devices were/are affected by that, so not sure. This article says you have to have 20GB free:
