What is the OFFICIAL explanation for folder permissions ALWAYS showing as "read-only"?

After bouncing around to old posts, this is what I have gathered:

The read-only attribute is only to tell Explorer to look for the desktop.ini file, OR

it's just a switch and it's displaying the default checked status, but NOT reflective of the actual folder contents, etc., OR

It is do to conflicting user settings...?

Is there an official Microsoft description of how it's actually MEANT to work? File and folder permissions are the most basic building blocks of an OpSys, and yet Windows has grown increasingly confusing and convoluted. How hard is it to have a folder permissions checkbox that actually does what it intuitively SHOULD do? The checkbox should intuitively show the current STATUS as well as let you instantly change the folder/content's settings and STORE THAT setting. Showing the same status all the time is not helpful for anyone, and if you're using it as some sort of Explorer flag, there's got to be a better way not to mention it ALWAYS shows the same state, so what's the point?! A description of what is really going on in Windows would be helpful!?! Thanks in advance!

    :)

  2. No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
