I've got several Windows devices: two desktops, a laptop, two Microsoft Surfaces, etc. Recently MIcrosoft made MIcrosoft Defender available for personal use I think associated with MIcrosoft 365 Family Edition. I might have the names or details wrong. So, I started to put Microsoft Defender onto all the devices I have on my account, I was trying to get Microsoft Defender onto my Surface Pro 7, when it told me that I had run out of the 10 devices I could have associated with my personal Microsoft account.So, I got into my Microsoft account and started looking at the devices I do have there. • Update the definitions. Either click the Update definitions button on the Update tab in Windows Defender, or download the latest definitions from the Microsoft

This issue might occur if you have set any task scheduler for Windows Defender.

I suggest you to delete the task for Windows defender and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps:

• 
  Search and open Schedule tasks.
  
• 
  In the left-hand menu, open the Task Scheduler Library, then select
  Microsoft >Windows >Windows Defender.
  
• 
  Double-click Windows Defender Scheduled Scan.
  
• 
  Select the Triggers panel, then select Delete.

I would suggest you to open Windows defender and add exclusions and check if it helps. Follow the steps to add exclusions in windows Defender.

• 
  Type Windows defender settings in the search bar and press enter
  
• 
  Under Exclusions click on Add Exclusion
