What makes Microsoft Edge such a crucial OS component? Why cant I simply uninstall it?


I just finished uninstalling it. It only took 35 minutes and I imagine thats faster than the norm.


I saved all the files with their permissions in tact and Im thoroughly looking froward to trashing them.


But Im thinking maybe some part of the OS must actually rey on Edge. Otherwise it should be a 1 minute uninstall process.


HERES THE QUESTION s?


1 Do I need Edge?


2a If yes, what depends on it?


2b If no, why is it so difficult to uninstall?


3 Did I categorize this question correctly for this forum? Where is the "Preinstalled software" category and the "Edge Browser" sub category? Or something of the sort; Nothing is even close. I feel like I miscategorized the question. But I didnt know where to put it.

hi Christina. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

It's a System Component which are best ignored if they don't have Uninstall buttons due to often crippling unintended consequences from uninstalling. But you can wait a while to see what happens and may be able to do without it until the next Update or Version
Upgrade when it will reinstall itself.

I don't see as many complaints that it steals the browser or PDF reader default any longer, so am hopeful that if you change those in Settings > Apps > Default Apps it will more or less disappear even if you leave it installed.

Install and Load Apps, then check the list for the app to get a custom uninstall script.

I would have several browsers on your task bar so there's always one that's best for the task. I use Firefox, Edge and Chrome in that order of preference. It's easy to share bookmarks between all of them in their settings under Import Favorites from another
Browser. Firefox and Chrome let you sign in to save and/or sync your Favorites on any other device you sign into, and are more reliable than Edge at doing this. Set the preferred browser as Default in Settings > Apps > Default Apps.

So then why must edge be so tedious to uninstall?

The question is, if I dont need Edge, why is it so difficult to uninstall?

I have no problems. I want to know why Microsoft believes Edge should not be uninstalled. I understated that it is a preinstalled System app. But what about edge makes Microsoft believe that the browser should not be uninstalled?

Again there is no problem, so no solution except to understand why this Edge browser is so crucial that is should not be uninstalled.
