What, no virtualisation technology option in your UEFI? RMA it!

Hi, Beware- your laptop may not have an option to enable Virtualisation Technology.

I eventually realised that I was failing to install Win 8.1 in VirtualBox because virtualisation technology was disabled.
(Acceleration tab in VirtualBox greyed out, "VT-x ... is not available" error)

    New custom laptop.

Called the supplier, PC Specialist in the UK.

    1. He understood what I was talking about.. great.
    2. He checked and confirmed there was no appropriate option in the locked down dumbed down version of UEFI
    3. He said 9 out of 10 laptops had it enabled by default. (ASUS motherboard).
    - why aren't they consistent?????
    4. Flashing it wasn't an option.
    5. So it has to be returned and replaced with a new one they will build and test, and return with my existing disks.
    6. Being picked up tomorrow... perhaps 10 days.

So a replacement laptop, which means an issue with my Windows license, and at least one one other program.

    Hmm.

Just in case someone else encounters a similar situation...

    :)

  4. What, no virtualisation technology option in your UEFI? RMA it!

Just use vmware player. It does not require that setting to be turned on in the bios. I didn't think virtual box required it either.

I have only noticed a slight performance improvement with that on, nothing major though. It all depends on usage however.

VirtualBox requires Virtualization support to install a 64 bit client with a 32 bit host. I don't think it is necessary for a 32 bit client. I don't know about VMWare.
