  1. What runs thefirst login AFTER OS upgrade from 1703 to 1803

We are using a VDI environment with VMware Writable volumes used for storing the user profiles. These profiles, and specifically the Start Menu built in apps such as Calculator, Photos, etc., worked normally while Windows was running 1703.

We then upgraded the master image to 1803. When users log into the 1803 version the Start Menu items do not work as expected, again specifically Calculator, Photos, Etc. do not. These apps are missing and cannot be found on the Start Menu or when searched. The EXE's for these apps are still on the system.

If we delete the user profile and allow it to be re-created logging into Windows 1803 the first time then these App Store Apps works normally and can also be found on the Start Menu.

I noticed while setting up a physical computer using 1703, logging in as two different users followed by upgrading to 1803, Windows runs some sort of First Login process apparently to upgrade the user profile. The Calculator, Photos, and other built in accessories work normally.

My theory is that user profiles go through an upgrade the first login to 1803 after an upgrade. Can anybody explain what this process is? Can I launch this process to cause profiles to be upgraded so they function normally without having to delete profiles?

    :)

  3. What runs thefirst login AFTER OS upgrade from 1703 to 1803

Thanks for the reply and advice of posting in Technet which I did do just a couple minutes ago. However, even though this is Windows running on VMware virtualization this is still just Windows so the question remains. Is this process secretive in some
way? I am sure others could find the information useful to understand what takes place on users profiles after OS system upgrades. I assume this will happen on each upgrade as Microsoft changes how profiles are stored/managed or otherwise manipulated for
the purposes of the modern UI.

    Thanks

What runs thefirst login AFTER OS upgrade from 1703 to 1803

Possible to upgrade w10 Pro 1703 to 1709 instead of 1803?

Note that assuming you need to have 1709, then if you wish to not upgrade to 1803 then either
    - if you have Pro you can defer this for 365 days
    - or you must take special action - before 1803 starts to download- to hide the upgrade.

    Further:
    This could suggest:
    - Windows update is broken or disabled on that PC
    - MS does not deem it fit to run 1709, so never offered it
    - it has been trying to upgrade to 1709 but repeatedly failing (you can check its Update History)
