Windows shows 8GB RAM installed but 4GB RAM is usable

    Hi There,

I've just upgraded my pc from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Windows seems to have detected this upgrade but why does it show as only 4GB RAM available. The following is what I have tried so far with no luck:

    • I have tried the msconfig method on ensuring maximum memory is not checked.
    • physically removed the new RAM and reinstalled it
Any thoughts/suggestions on how i can resolve this matter?

    Thanks

  3. Only 4GB RAM usable out of 16? -- using Windows 10 64 bit

So I bought this computer used and just noticed that there is only 4GB of RAM available while the other 12GB is "hardware reserved". I've searched around and tried a few things but nothing is working so far. Here's what I've come up with so far:

    • I've updated the BIOS for motherboard, which is an MSI 970 gaming motherboard.
    • Despite what others have suggested, it is not possible to remap the memory for this BIOS.
    • I've tried changing BIOS settings, as well as changing the "maximum memory" setting through msconfig -> boot -> advanced options.

Here are my specs via Speccy:

My .txt file from running CPU-Z (MSI Version) should be attached.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Windows 10 using 4GB reserved RAM

I have updated Bios already threw my days of troubleshooting. Bios Version is now F6. I updated using the @bios app provided by Gigabyte. and sadly Cmos still only sees 4Gb ram and Windows sees 8Gb but locking 4GB still) .. I thought maybe it was my built
in graphics so threw testing I disabled that option, and it did not change nothing. however leaving the onboard video active does not add to the hardware reserve unless I plug a monitor into that output at which time it adds 500MB to the already 4GB reserved.
I have disabled the onboard graphics and it changed nothing. I cant seem to find anything about Memory mapping like some suggested so I assume my board dont do that. even swapping RAM with different sticks/speed doesn't seem to do anything (other than show
new ram and half still locked) . some have suggested a fresh install of windows 10 but I have a lot of stuff I dont want to loose and I dont see how that would fix this issue (although I suppose the windows can be buggy.. not like Microsoft would release a
buggy OS or anything).. lol.. but I dunno im at a loss.. I cant even remember all the troubleshooting ive done.. but ill try to list some of what ive tried.

    1 flashed Bios/CMOS

    2 reset Bios/CMOS

3 checked MSCONFIG and made sure max memory was unchecked ..

4 installed each stick 1 at a time

5 mem test both sticks 1 at a time

6 windows memory test 1 stick at a time

7 regedit to adjust values on memory manager

    8 disabled onboard graphics

short of wiping and reinstalling windows I think I have done everything I can possibly think of. as well as stuff I never though of thanks to this being a major issue (as there are so many message boards regarding this issue) but I am at a loss as nothing
    is working

the only thing I haven't done which just dawned on me is to remove my dedicated card and see the difference when PC boots , perhaps it is the dedicated video card stealing the RAM , I know it states it does share 2GB so to me that would leave 2GB still
unaccounted for. Im sure windows itself will lock a few 100 MB.. maybe I will have to try to remove my Video card and boot machine with just onboard and see if it releases the RAM. that is probably the only thing more I can personally think to do
