What to do if a old computer ssd was used to start surface pro 8 via external enclosure,...

I removed the ssd card from an old surface pro 4 I had, and plugged it in to surface pro 8 via an enclosure. I then booted from USB, and surface pro 8 booted up as it was my previous surface pro 4 OS. Windows 10 then installed the necessary drivers to run surface pro 8 with the old ssd as its main c drive. Now when I disconnect the external ssd the computer won’t start from the internal ssd with windows 11 as it originally did. It just starts as a black screen after displaying the windows logo. If anyone could enlighten me as to what happened, and can help me get my surface pro 8 running again

    :)

  2. External Enclosure Advice for File Transfer to new SSD

    Hi,

Please could someone help me regarding external enclosures -

I have sent my laptop (Lenovo gaming laptop/Ideapad) away to be upgraded with a better SSD for larger memory/storage, as I've run out of storage. I thought I had backed everything up from my files, however after checking my memory stick I've seen there are a few things missing that I must have somehow forgotten about, so I'm having a bit of a panic that these will be lost forever!

The IT technician says he will give my old HDD back to me when I come to collect my upgraded laptop, so I just need to figure out a way of transferring all the data from my old HDD to my new SSD/laptop. I'm not very tech savvy but have seen about external enclosure/adaptors - am I right in thinking I can insert my old HDD into one of these enclosure/adaptors and easily transfer the data over to my laptop?

I found the following on Amazon but not sure if they're any good:

If any of these would be suitable for my needs, or you have any recommendations/tips on this, it would be very much appreciated, I know almost nothing when it comes to computers!

Thanks very much for your help,

    Annabel

Laptop won't boot from external m.2 SSD in enclosure

    Hello all,

I have a Lenovo Legion Y540-15IRH with Windows 11 installed. I recently purchased a WD_Black 1tb SSD to upgrade from the SK Hyinx 256gb that came installed. Western Digital offers Acronis True Image software to clone the drives for free. In the Acronis instructions it says to install the new SSD and put the old SSD into an enclosure to boot from in order to have a bootable clone. When I try to boot from my old SSD in the enclosure I bought, it fails every time. Most of the time it attempts to repair the disk for a couple of minutes and then says the repairs have failed. When I reinstall the old SSD into my computer it works perfectly.

    Things I have tried:

    • Setting the boot priority
    • Turning off the secure boot
    • Switching ports (usb-c and usb 3.0)
If this were a cloning issue I would go to Arconis but I haven't even gotten to that step yet. Any advice would be helpful.

What to do if a old computer ssd was used to start surface pro 8 via external enclosure,...

    Surface Pro 3

    Hi ChrisWaters3,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Could you please help me with the below information:

    1. Does the battery drain out, if the tablet is not connected to peripherals?

    2. Which version of Windows you are using? (To check, type: winver in start menu and hit enter.)

I understand how something like this can try your patience. This issue is an indication of faulty drivers or incompatible driver.
However, I suggest you to follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned below:

    Method 1: Check the drivers.

    Step1: Battery driver

    1. Press Windows andR
      key together on your Keyboard.
    2. Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
    3. Click on view on top > Select Show hidden devices.
    4. Expand the Batteries option from the list.
    5. Select the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery> right click on the driver and click on
      Properties.
    6. Click on Driver tab > check if you have the option to
      Roll Back Driver.
    7. If yes, Roll back the driver or uninstall it and restart the computer.
Uninstalling the driver will be automatically installed after the system is restarted. Check if the issue is fixed.

    Step 2: Keyboard driver.

    1. In the Device manager, go to ‘Other devices’, you will find
      Unknown devices.
    2. Double tap on the unknown device > click on
Driver tab> click on update driver.
    3. Select browse my computer for driver software> Click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers
    4. Select keyboard, then click ‘Next.
    5. Select HID Keyboard device and click finish.

    Method 2: Run the toolkit.

Note: If your Surface is managed by your work or school, check with your organization's IT department before running the tool.

I would suggest you to run the toolkit provided by Microsoft on
    Fix common Surface
problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

If the above steps, doesn’t fix the issue. I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned in the article on
    Surface Pro 3 Battery
FAQ for the Surface Pro Embedded Controller Firmware update
    .

    Hope it helps.
