Windows 10: What username/password does Windows 10 use for hosting shared folders?

My account was a local account with no password that was later switched to a Microsoft account.

I tried to log in with my Windows username + MS password and my email address + my MS password.

Both failed.

What do I do?

Sharing a folder

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I appreciate your time and patience to work on this issue.

To know the username of your computer, please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Type Command prompt in the search bar.
   
2. Right click on the Command prompt icon and select Run as Administrator.
   
3. Type whoami in Command Prompt window and press Enter.
   
4. You will find the username of the computer, use the username and your password to access the file from the shared folder.
   

However, if the above steps didn’t help, I suggest you to turn off password protected sharing and check if that helps.

To turn off password protected sharing, please follow the steps mentioned below on your laptop:

1. Press and hold Windows + R key on the keyboard.
   
2. Type Control and click on
   OK.
   
3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
   
4. Click on Change advance sharing settings.
   
5. Under All Networks, click on
   Turn off password protected sharing.

Windows Security Requires Password when Attempting to Connect to Windows 10 Shared Folders Even Though Password Protected Sharing is Turned Off

After upgrading to Windows 10 we are prompted for authentication when trying to connect to shared network folders on this PC even though password protected sharing is turned off. The only computer on the network able to connect to shared folders on this
PC without being prompted for a username and password is a Mac.

We have tried everything listed in the forums:

-Enabling the guest account

-Using existing local user usernames and passwords

-Adding local users to the host PC that match existing users trying to connect

-Allowing Windows to manage Homegroup connections (even though we do not use a Workgroup or Homegroup)

-Disabling Windows Firewall

We do not have or use Microsoft Outlook accounts on any computers (and prefer not to).

Even if we could find username and password combinations that work, that the host PC requires authentication prevents us from using software which needs to access the shared files and folders, as well as scanners and copiers that are unable to connect to
this PC.

If we can, we would prefer to turn off any and all prompts for authentication.
