    I have an intel core 2 duo 2.20 ghz and I bought an intel core quad extreme 3.0 ghz

    My motherboard is xfx nforce 680i sli which supports the intel core quad extreme.

    What do I need to do before I install?

    Backup files you cant replace. Download the latest bios file and research forums which bios file is stable. You might get message new cpu installed at boot. Go to bios save & reboot.

    I hope that your motherboard's BIOS doesn't need to be updated to support the new CPU.

    I didn't register at XFX's web site to see what legacy support they provide, but XFX is clearly out of the motherboard business. (Their nForce 680i SLI dates from 2007.)

    Assuming that the board is already updated to be OK with the new CPU, then it's not necessary to do anything.

    Backing things up before doing anything major to the hardware is always a good idea. For my own purposes, I'd regard it as essential, if there is any data on the machine that I wouldn't care to lose.
