Windows 10: What’s next for Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and other platforms

Microsoft recently launched Chromium-based Edge Insider browser on Windows PCs and the company has confirmed that the browser is also coming soon to macOS. In addition to making the browser available for more testers, Microsoft is also testing various new features for Edge behind the scenes.

At Build 2019 slideshow, Microsoft teased multiple major improvements for Edge browser, including support for smooth scrolling and better integration with Windows 10 hardware.

The company also highlighted the small new features that would debut in Edge at some point in the future. For example, full support for dark theme, new features for the PDF reader. Microsoft is also working on a share button, as well as integrated spell checking system powered by Microsoft Translator and an option to clear data on exit.

Microsoft re-thinking about classic Edge features like set aside tabs, tab previews, ink notes and favourites hub button. Microsoft also says these features are evolving, but it’s not clear when and if Edge will get these functionalities.

Introducing the Microsoft Edge Platform Issue Tracker

The biggest input into our roadmap for the EdgeHTML web platform is developer feedback. Your ideas and votes on User Voice, questions on Stack Overflow, tweets on Twitter, and other comments and suggestions are constantly monitored by our team to drive ongoing adjustment to our plans.

On Monday at the Edge Web Summit, we were pleased to announce our latest way for developers to provide crucial feedback and communicate openly with our team – the Microsoft Edge Platform Issue Tracker at issues.microsoftedge.com.

Platform Issues on Microsoft Edge Dev

We receive tens of thousands of pieces of feedback daily through the Feedback Hub in Windows 10. You can reach the Feedback Hub through the “…” (‘More’) menu in Edge, under “Send Feedback. This feedback helps us identify broken sites and shapes our browser user experience through changes like the recent addition of history context menus for the back and forward buttons, pinned tabs, extensions, and more. But web developers, browser engineers, and standards contributors also need a way to collaborate on technical platform issues, such as interoperability differences or standards incompliance.

The EdgeHTML issue tracker is designed for the web platform, with tracking for interoperability, standards impact, site outreach, and support for code snippets and markdown in repro steps. Over time, we’ll be adding more features to the tracker to make it even better for openly communicating and addressing your feedback.

This tool will replace connect.microsoft.com/ie going forward, and we have migrated open bugs from Connect to the new system. Bugs against the Chakra JavaScript engine are best directed to the ChakraCore repository on GitHub.

We built Platform Issues to address feedback that it was difficult to report issues to our team. We’re also taking steps to increase the level of communication you receive from our engineering team when reporting issues and we’ll be watching for your feedback on the new site itself. We look forward to hearing your feedback and, most of all, fixing bugs to make the web work great for you and your customers!

Previewing our first platform updates for Microsoft Edge

Yesterday, we moved Microsoft Edge Dev out of beta, and we are now directing all traffic from status.modern.ie to our new Platform Status page, which has significant improvements to performance and clarity. Today, we are excited to give the first look at our initial wave of feature updates to the Microsoft Edge web platform, starting with the following new features now in development for EdgeHTML.

These features are in development now and will start to appear soon in preview builds for Windows Insiders prior to being released to the general public. In addition to these new features, several features we previously announced will start to appear in preview builds soon, including:

Our Platform Status page has been updated to reflect these announcements – we look forward to sharing preview implementations in the coming weeks!

New roadmap details on Platform Status

In addition to these updates, we’ve also made improvements to Platform Status to address feedback. One of the most common pieces of feedback we have received on Platform Status is that there’s a lack of clarity around items listed as “Under Consideration.” To address this, we are opening our roadmap up even more with new “backlog priority” labels for Status items. Here we will give some insight into where individual technologies fall on our backlog for future releases.

While we can’t always commit to a specific timeframe, you can think of our priority levels as corresponding to:

High – On deck; We hope to begin development in an upcoming iteration

Medium – On our backlog; Development is likely for a future release

Low – Investigating; We are still evaluating the technology. There may be significant spec stabilization, foundational work, or additional community input required before we can begin development

You can see a few examples today at on Platform Status, including:

Over the coming weeks, we will be adding these priority labels to the existing set of technologies marked “Under Consideration” on Platform Status, to provide more insight into our plans. We hope that sharing these insights can help developers plan ahead and give a broad sense of when they can expect key technologies to be available in Microsoft Edge. Combined with other vendors’ release status (which we aggregate on Platform Status), this is useful to understand when technologies are or will be broadly interoperable on the web, and safe to build into your sites.

Introducing EdgeHTML 13, first platform update for Microsoft Edge

Last week, the first major update for Windows 10 began rolling out to over 110 million devices, including improvements in all aspects of the platform and experience. This update brings Microsoft Edge’s rendering engine to EdgeHTML 13, which Windows Insiders have been previewing for the last few months.

When we first introduced Microsoft Edge as “Project Spartan” back in January, we promised an evergreen browser. This means developers can rely on Microsoft Edge users always having the latest version of the rendering engine, and can expect frequent updates to the platform with new features and standards support. With EdgeHTML 13, we’re excited to deliver a broad set of major new platform features only a few months after the first public release of Microsoft Edge, as an automatic update to all Current Branch customers of Windows 10.

Feature updates in EdgeHTML 13

Back in August, we gave our first peek at our priorities for this release, as well as some longer term goals for future releases. If you have been watching the Microsoft Edge changelog, you may have seen these features lighting up build-by-build in the Insider Program. These updates bring Microsoft Edge to a score of 458 on HTML5Test – an improvement of 56 points in just a few months, and 117 points over Internet Explorer 11.

HTML5Test measures declared support for features defined in the HTML5 specification as well as extensions and related specifications.

Feature updates in Chakra

In addition to the improvements in EdgeHTML, this release also includes major improvements and new feature support in Chakra, the JavaScript engine powering Microsoft Edge. Major features like asm.js are now enabled by default. With these updates, Microsoft Edge is by a wide margin the highest-scoring desktop browser in the Kangax ES6 compatibility table, which measures support for the component features of ES2015, perhaps the largest update in JavaScript history.

In addition, the “Experimental JavaScript features” flag under about:flags now includes experimental support for early ES2016 features, including Async Functions and the Exponentiation operator.

Many Windows 10 devices, one web platform

This update marks a special moment for the Windows 10 web platform as we ship the same version of EdgeHTML to all Windows 10 devices: PCs, Windows 10 phones (via the Windows Insider Program), and even Xbox One. Whether it’s adaptive images on phones with the <picture> element and extended srcset, or even in-browser gaming on the Xbox One with WebGL and GamePad API, Microsoft Edge empowers users and developers alike to be confident in a consistent, modern, and powerful experience across devices.

New end-user features in Microsoft Edge

While this blog is focused on developer features, this release also updates the Microsoft Edge app to Microsoft Edge 25, which includes powerful new features like Tab Preview, synced Favorites and Reading List, and wireless multimedia casting for video, audio, and photos. This update also includes major security improvements in Microsoft Edge, with industry-leading code integrity enforcement in the Windows kernel, and updates to SmartScreen to protect users from drive-by attacks in the browser. We’ll be exploring each of these features in separate posts soon.

This is just the first step in a journey of delivering Microsoft Edge updates regularly, and we’re excited to get right back to work on our next set of improvements.
