    I use OneDrive extensively, but I'm not quite clear on what happens to OneDrive during a Ransomware attack. I suppose it will encrypt the OneDrive files too. If the files aren't deleted but overwritten, I figured they wouldn't be in the OneDrive recycle
    bin.

    I go back to when there was an MS-DOS backup command that went to multiple floppy disks. Backup has always been a problem with Microsoft. Backup programs worked for a while and then you had to go third party. I thought that with Windows 7 we finally had
    a backup strategy to go forward with. It appears not.

    Macrim does look interesting, particularly their new anti-ransomware feature.

    Hi KW. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

    Built-in File History, Windows Backup and Image Backup are having a lot of problems and may be phased out soon. For automated backup I'd use a better, more flexible app like free Macrium which just works.

    In addition I'd have a secondary cloud backup that keeps your files safest from fire and theft:

    You can drag 5gb for free into OneDrive app to store in the cloud where they are safe from fire and theft.

    If you install Google Drive, you can use their new Backup to choose User folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) to sync up to 15g for free to their cloud.

    Or you can also drag or copy them to a USB external or flash drive.

    Patchcleaner is great to clean up a very large C:\windows\installer directory
    I use treesizefree to see which folders are consuming the most space.
    Many people recommend using ccleaner.

    My personal opinion, is generally to stay away from using cleaners. I keep a virtual machine and when i play and want to test software, I do it from the virtual machine. This way I have nothing to clean from my regular machine.

    ccleaner is a long running and safe cleaner. You need to go through it's options and decide what you don't want it to clean.

    CCleaner - Builds is like a Swiss knife, I can not imagine any PC being without it. Very reputable even on this forum.

    Wise Disk Cleaner - Disk Cleanup and Defrag Tool - I use it since 8, it cleans Windows Updates PatchCache.

    Plus a few Windows commands:

    fsutil usn deletejournal /d /n c:
    chkdsk /scan
    winmgmt /salvagerepository
    del "%temp%\*" /s /f /q
    del "%systemroot%\temp\*" /s /f /q
    vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /all /quiet
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
    cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

    That's the one thing that I recommend people stay away from doing unless they have a problem they haven't been able to fix using any other method. A few lingering items in the registry is really not a problem, there are hundreds of thousands of registry entries. 4 entries from a software install is not going to impact overall system performance.

    I've been using CCleaner so I tried Wise Disk Cleaner on my Windows 10 PC which originally started life as a Windows 8 PC. The Common Cleaner scan found 4GB of 'useless files' and the Slimming System option found another 1.9GB of which 1.6GB was in the Windows Installer Baseline Cache.

    How safe is Wise Disk Cleaner to use since there is no option to move the surplus files into temporary storage in case there are problems?
