Windows 10: What's wrong with my computer/xbox elite remote/keyboard???`

I bought this computer almost a year ago and since day 1 I've had trouble getting my xbox elite remote to be recognized in my games when they load. Half the time I can unplug my keyboard and then the controller will work, and will for several other games. Then out of the blue it will make the keyboard/mouse the primary control for the games, and I can't do anything to change it. I basically have to close the app, reset my whole computer, and try loading it again, in the off-chance it will work this time... It happens with EVERY game, so it's not an in game settings issue. I imagine this fix is

Xbox One Elite Controller

Basically I have brought an Xbox One Elite console and controller last year and I have accidentally broken the plug in micro USB thing at the top of the controller so i cant plug it into the xbox and play without the need of recharge. So i have used batteries
to charge my remote but the batteries are too expensive and they cost a lot and dont last as long as i want them to last. So i have decided to buy an Xbox One charging station where there is a little unit where i stick the controller into and it charges. little
did i know the xbox one elite back of the controller is a different shape to the normal ones so i have basically wasted £15 and i ripped the box so i cant return it. now i am stumped. the back of the controller part does fit into place but there is two bits
of plastic in the wrong place so it is unable to fit. if i could adapt it somehow would it be able to work fine in my elite controller?

before someone comments "you put this question in the wrong catagory" im sorry but there is no xbox one catagory so i cant see where to ask the question but here.
