Windows 10: whatsapp video call unable to unmute microphone

Launched the WhatsApp app on Windows 10, selected camera and mic.Camera works fine in video calls, mic is constantly muted and unable to unmute.I can use the same mic to leave voice messages in WhatsApp though, so the app has permissions - it's just the video call that won't unmute. I've tried 2 different microphones too with the same result.

Can't unmute microphone?

In general, the microphone is on mute. We'd like to clarify following steps that you've done and ask you a few questions:

• When you unmute the microphone, is it via Recording tab under
  Recording devices?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
• Are there any newly installed applications that may have caused this?
• Is this an on going issue or recent?

Hi Ruth,

This issue might have been caused by a misconfigured settings or incompatible driver. For us to unmute the microphone, please follow these steps:

• At the system tray, right-click on the volume icon.
• Select Recording devices.
• On the Sound window, make sure that you are on the Recording tab.
• On the list of recording devices, double-click on your microphone device.
• Properties window will open. Click on Levels tab.
• Increase the Microphone slider to maximum.
• Click the speaker icon next to it to unmute the microphone.
• Click on Apply, and then click on OK to save changes.

Your Phone calls always have echo using AUX headset and microphone

Finally had a bit of time to try this out again. Here's what I tried quickly:

• With the original microphone:
  
  • Microphone unmuted, headphones unmuted: Caller gets feedback
    
  • Microphone hardware muted (external switch), headphones unmuted: Caller gets feedback
    
  • Microphone software muted (through the Phone Link app), headphones unmuted: Caller does NOT get feedback
    
  • Microphone unmuted, headphones mutes: Caller does NOT get feedback
    
• With my webcam as the microphone:
  
  • Microphone unmuted, headphones unmuted: Caller gets feedback
    
  • Microphone software muted (through the Phone Link app), headphones unmuted: Caller does NOT get feedback
    
  • Microphone unmuted, headphones mutes: Caller does NOT get feedback
    

I did a couple quick tests with Audacity where I listen to a YouTube video with my headphones and microphone on and I've noticed that there is a bit of leakage from the headphones into the microphone, so I think I'll need to investigate the leakage issue a bit more first.
