    When are updates REALLY installed

Reliability Monitor also shows updates, and I generally find its GUI a little easier and less labor-intensive to navigate than Event Viewer. Just my opinion, though: either one works fine.
Here's what update info looks like in relimon:

  2. I see that these updates were installed on my desktop on April 10:
    KB4093112
    KB4093110
    KB4018355
    KB4018354
    KB4011717
    KB4018353
I took that from the "view installed update history" screen, which shows no "newer" updates.

When I did a shutdown/restart yesterday April 19 it installed some updates.
I presume that this was the set of six updates listed above.

So why does the update history show "successfully installed on 4/10/2018" if, in fact, they were installed on 4/19/2018?

Should I take it that the April 10 "installed" date was the date they were downloaded ... and that they were not "really" installed until I rebooted on April 19 ?

    :)

  3. when updates are downloaded, then installed

It is always recommended to download and install updates immediately, but if for some reason you want to do it later, you could schedule update install time in Windows Update setting.

  4. When are updates REALLY installed

when updates are downloaded, then installed

When Windows has an update, I get the option to "shutdown with update" or to "shutdown without update". At the end of the day, I click on "shutdown with update" so it will download the upgrade.

Why on earth doesn't Windows install the update then? It takes forever.

Instead, the next time I need to use my laptop, Windows forces me to wait 15 minutes while it installs and reboots then.

Why doesn't Windows at least give me the courtesy of asking me if I want to install now or later at that point?

The people at Samsung are smart enough to think this through. I get a notification that there's an upgrade, and then I'm asked if I want to schedule it, do later, install now. I always schedule overnight - when I'm not using the phone.

Come on, Windows! Pls explain why you can't do that too.

You are indeed correct. A lot of updates are installed upon a Restart. This has been the case way back to Windows XP, if not before.

I always do a Restart to make sure of updates being done in a timely manner.

You can investigate further if you wish, the MS info is very approximate.
