When attempting to extend an active partition, it says 'could not complete operation, no...

I am trying to migrate my windows os onto a different ssd, and have successfully gotten the os cloned onto my new drive.

However, the cloning software has made a partition that is identical in size to my previous os, despite my new drive having close to 400 gb of free space that is unallocated.

In the process of attempting to extend the partition to utilize this free space, I have made the new drive a dynamic disk in order to extend the volume of the partition.

However, whenever I try to do so, an error comes up saying 'There is not enough available space on the disk to complete this operation', despite there being 400 gb of unallocated space. Attempting to create a new simple volume from that unallocated space yields the same results.

I just want to have my operating system and all the files on my old ssd in this new ssd and be able to use the extra space of my new ssd. How do I fix this?

    Thanks.

    :)

  2. How to extend C partition

    Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the information provided.

Please to inform you that you need to have an “unallocated disk space” to the right of the Partition\Volume you wish to extend on the same drive. Only when “unallocated disk space” is available “extend” option is highlighted.

I suggest you to try these steps and check if they helps.

Step1: Press Windows + R and Diskmgmt.msc and try the following

    a. Right click the basic volume want to extend.

    b. Click extend volume.

    c. Follow the instruction on the screen.

Step2: Open a command prompt and type diskpart.

At the DISKPART prompt, type list volume. Make note of the basic volume you want to extend.

At the DISKPART prompt, type select volume <volumenumber>. This selects the basic volume volumenumber that you want to extend into contiguous, empty space on the same disk.

At the DISKPART prompt, type extend [size=<size>]. This extends the selected volume by size megabytes (MB).

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we would be happy to help.

  3. unmark a partition as "active"

    Hello Bob,

Thank you for posting your concern in Microsoft Community and welcome to the Windows 10 Family.

Please be informed that marking a partition as active on a basic disk means that the computer will use the loader (an operating system tool) on that partition to start the operating system. An active partition is a partition on a hard drive set as the bootable
partition that contains the operating system. So it is not advisable to configure anything related to boot partition.

Please follow the below steps to unmark the partition as active:

    • Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.

    • Type in diskpart and press Enter.
    • To identify which disk you need to work with. Type the command: list disk.

This will list all the drives connected to your computer.

    • To select the disk enter the command: select disk n

"n" will correspond to the disk # for the ssd you are referring to.

    • To list all the partitions on the disk enter the command:
      list partition

    • To select a partition use: select partition n

Substitute "n" correctly and it will select the particular partitions on that drive.

    • To unmark the current partition as active use the command line:
      inactive

    • Exit the command prompt using command:
      exit

    • Reboot the system to let the changes happen.

Hope the above information is helpful. If you need further assistance, we would be happy to help you.

    Thank you.
