Windows 10: When editing models with 3D Builder it introduces corruption causing merge and repair...

Does Microsoft have a solution for the corruption introduced into edited models by 3D Builder?


Just in case you're not aware of the problem, here's how it works...


I created a some models in 3D Builder.




I would have used 3D Builder to print them, but it doesn't support any of the printers people actually use. So I used Cura 3.6.0. When I imported the .3mf file I saw this:





If you notice, 2 of the objects aren't sitting on the bed and the striped pattern indicates that that model won't completely fit on the bed. These models are only supposed to take up an area approximately 150mm x 200mm x 25mm. My print bed is 200mm x 200mm x 180mm. They should fit.


Please notice the white lines extending from the striped model. Those are the actual boundaries of the model. 3D Builder introduced a huge amount of empty space. This is the reason the other models aren't touching the bed. They also have massive boundaries around them.


So, then I opened the file up in Meshmixer because the Microsoft site 3D Tools couldn't fix it. In Meshmixer, I saw what kind of a mess there really was:




The box with the red bubble represents the print area of my printer. Please notice the 2 objects at the near part of the grid. I didn't even see those models in Cura. They were too far away. Here's the real mess... The list of objects in the Object Browser window is a list of all the separate models in the file. My models were merged. There should only be 4 in this list. It's hard to see, but the 2 objects I pointed out are actually duplicates. The majority of this list are duplicate models from different edits. There's also a couple of pieces of objects as well.


I thought I could go through the list, check each model and delete the objects I didn't need. That is until I realized that some of the duplicates represented small adjustments, etc. At times there wasn't much difference between the duplicates, so it was impossible to sort out which was the final copy.


My theory is that 3D Builder isn't cleaning up after itself. I think it's leaving too much past editing data in the file.


Anyone got any ideas what can be done about this? Is Microsoft Development fixing it?

3D Builder Export to obj with colors

The issue could occur if OBJ file is exported correctly or the file is corrupt.



3D Builder can view, capture, personalize, and print 3D models using 3D Builder. Download many kinds of 3D files and edit them using the 3D modeling space. Take a picture with your webcam and make it 3D. Personalize 3D files by embossing your name, or combine
models and pieces to make something new.

To assist you better, please provide the information:

• Have you created another 3D format files through 3D Builder app and checked in another 3D modelling program?
• When you say that "but the OBJ generated does not seem to contain texture/color information", by which app or applications have you tried to open the OBJ 3D file?

I suggest you export the 3D file to another file other than OBJ file. Check if the texture and picture is visible or not.

3D Builder Crashing After Loading a Model

• Type “Troubleshooting” in the search box and press Enter.
• Click on ‘View All’ on the top left pane.
