Windows 10: When freeing up space on a partition, space is not released in the Microsoft Storage Spaces...

After deleting files on the disk, space in the pool is not freed, resulting in a write error due to lack of space, even though 2 TB is free on the disk.I have performed defragmentation defrag /G /K /L /X and chkdisk, but without success.In earlier versions Windows 10, this issue did not occur.Space releasing only if i delete whole disk partitions with virtual disk.Pool version: 28Provisioning type: ThinStorage Spaces file system: NTFS with 4 KB clustersCompression: NoEncryption: BitLockerOperating system: Windows 11 24H2Build number: 26100.2894

Partition space

You're not understanding this. Unallocated space is NOT equal as (partitioned) empty space.

Unallocated space means empty RAW sectors on HDD. Empty space means an already allocated file system (either FAT32 or NTFS or any other) that is not occupied by any data.

So in your case, as DanTheBanjoman already suggested, don't try to shrink "unallocated space", extend the main (C*Smile partition instead. You can't shrink something that doesn't exist (unallocated space), but you can extend the existing partition over unallocated space.
So, just select the C: partition and extend it further. Program should automatically allow you to do that. I'm not using Partition Magic, but i usually done this with either:
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free - manage and resize disk partitions (also for 64bit OS!)

or

EaseUS Partition Master - manage disk partitions (only for 32bit OS!)

 

Storage Space

Surface Pro 3 storage space is low. Storage settings say that Apps and Games is using 17.5 GB but when I add up the space from the list of apps it is only 5.7 GB. What is taking up up the other ~12 GB and how do I free up space?

You don't show a screenshot, so I am uncertain to which part of the process of creating a storage space you are referring. I pointed you to the tutorials. I now provide you with a screenshot of part of one of them, which shows a warning which might be what you are referring to.





Your question about double storage / redundancy appears to relate to the normal operation of storage spaces once configured, so seems obscure.

My impression is that few here have used storage spaces.
