Windows 10: When I press the power button my computer starts up, but then only shows a blacks screen. A...

I have tried on ironically everything that I could’ve found on the Internet, and previous post about similar issues. Every single one of them has resulted in different situations or discontinued conversation. A prime example is that whenever I go into, try to go into safe mode, it doesn’t let me I do not have the option to go into safe mode. I’ve tried everything else multiple times, and do not have access to just a flash drive in another PC. I’m using a laptop so I can’t really take it apart or anything. I’ve been at this for hours.

May I ask what did you do before the black screen occurs? To help you avoid the same situation from happening again.



Because you are entering safe mode in black screen mode, the steps are more cumbersome, please follow the steps:

Note: If you’ve encrypted your device, you’ll need your BitLocker key to start in safe mode.

1. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
   
2. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
   
3. On the first sign that Windows has started (for example, some devices show the manufacturer’s logo when restarting) hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
   
4. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
   
5. When Windows restarts, hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
   
6. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
   
7. Allow your device to fully restart. You will enter winRE.
   

Now that you are in winRE, you will follow these steps to take you to safe mode:

1. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Startup Settings -> Restart.
   
2. After your device restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select option 5 from the list or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

Use the power button to turn off the computer at Welcome screen

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.



I understand that you want to turn off computer at the Welcome screen using the power button.



Ideally, if no user has logged in to the computer, the computer will shut down by pressing the power button. However, I would suggest you to check the settings for power button. Refer the steps mentioned below and see if that helps:

1. Press Windows key + X, and select
   Power Options.
   
2. Click on Additional power settings.
   
3. Now, click on Choose what power button does from the left pane.
   
4. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
   
5. Select Shut down from the drop down for
   When I press the power button.
   

If you are using Windows 10 Pro, you may also want to check the Group Policy Settings, refer the steps mentioned below:

1. Press Windows key + R, to open
   Run dialog box.
   
2. Type gpedit.msc and click on
   OK.
   
3. Navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Button Settings.
   
4. On the right pane, double click on Select the Power button action (plugged in), click on
   Enabled and select Shutdown from the drop down for
   Power Button Action.
   
5. Repeat step 4 for Select the Power button action (on battery).
   
6. Restart the computer.
   

If a user has logged in to the computer and then logs off from the computer, the computer will shut down by pressing the power button. However, if a user is logged in to the computer and locks the computer using the
Windows key + L combination, the power button will not shutdown the computer. You will have to use the power button on the lock screen to shut down the computer.

Allow system to be shut down without having to log on.

Dell XP’s 13 black screen on power up

Only light is power button. The light on caps lock comes on it I press it. No dell logo or anything on the screen just perm at black. Will try some of things suggested. Most common advice is to manually power off 3 times to force start up repair, but this doesn’t happen for me
