  1. When I type/search for something in the start menu, how do I forbid Windows from sending it...

Literally everything I type at the start menu attempts to connect to Microsoft's servers. I know because my network monitor caught it. It's searchapp.exe.

I googled the issue, people are recommending using Group Policy to enable the Administrative Templates/Windows Component/Search "Do not allow web search" and "Don't search the web or display web results in search" entries. I did that, then rebooted, and searchapp still wants to send my keystrokes.

I just want offline search. Why is that so offensive to Microsoft's tastes?
