When is it time to image my C drive?

System works good in Win 10... I've done all the right things in cleaning out old OS, hardly anything in cleanup to fix, have docs and most files linked to the D drive, mostly just Win 10 and program files, program data on the drive itself. It's showing 19Gb free of 223Gb on my SSD.

I did buy a 500Gb drive so it's ready to go... I just get the heebie jeebies thinking about imaging the drive to a new one and swapping them out. When would you install the new one?

    a. Stop being a wimp and get it over with.
    b. I'd run it until you get to about XXGb free. (insert number here)
    c. Run it till it starts giving you errors or starts smoking.

    :)

  2. How to: Create a system image in Windows 10

    Hello there.

I have created a system image for my C: driver. My HDD include C: and DWhen is it time to image my C drive? :(Game drive)

When I chose "Which drives do you want to include in the backup". The System Reserved(System) and C: partition was chosen by default.

Today, I used this system image to restore my system. After restoring, all games in D partition is gone, disappear.

How to fix this issue next time? Please tell me.

  3. C drive is corrupted, need to format it to reinstall, what about my Windows licence?

My computer was originally installed with Windows 8.1. I updated early and I am/was running Windows 10.

My SSD drive, which is my C: with my Windows install, got a major crash.

My laptop is now not able to boot and loop on the BIOS.

I have used a bootable USB with Windows 10 install.

    * Trouble shoot\Advanced\Start up repair is failing and gives message "Start up repair couldn't repir your PC"

    * Trouble shoot\Reset this PC\Keep my files is failing and gives message "The drive where windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again"

    * Trouble shoot\Advanced\Command prompt\ C: fails and gives message "The volume does not contain a recognize file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted"

    * Trouble shoot\Advanced\Command prompt\ chkdsk c: fails and gives message "The type of the file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives"

So I guess it is bad.

I plan to format my C: hopping that would at least allow me to reinstall my Windows 10 from my bootable USB. Though I am afraid of loosing my Windows license. How the license is tied to my computer is unclear to me in the new "No sticker" world.

Could someone confirm if I will lose my license? If yes, is there anyway to recover it before it is too late?

    Thank you,

When is it time to image my C drive?

Do it now. You will want the extra free space available when the Anniversary update hits on August 2.

You say you have a D: drive, assuming 2nd hard drive. Save an image file using Macrium Reflect free of the entire current SSD to the second hard drive. Make yourself a bootable Macrium Reflect rescue flash drive/DVD or Kyhi's recovery drive. Make sure your computer can boot from the rescue/recovery drive. Swap out the SSDs, boot from the rescue/recovery drive. Restore the image stored on the second hard drive to the new SSD.

If for some reason it doesn't boot, use the rescue/recovery drive and in Macrium under the restore menu is a utility to fix Windows boot problems that should get you easily rolling again.

If the entire world goes to crap - you can always just put the original SSD back in.
