When launched, most games will go to black screen and be unresponsive

I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro today from Windows 8.1 Pro. My main issue with Win10 is that most of the games I play have trouble launching. I press play (in Steam), and the game will launch, but never fully load; it'll just go to a black screen, and in the task manager it says the application is "Not responding".

The games I have tried this on is CS:GO, Bioshock (1), Bioshock Infinite, Dirty Bomb, Portal 2, and Rocket League. All of them fail to launch except Rocket League, which takes a ridiculously long time to launch, and when I quit, it freezes and becomes unresponsive. I have tried to reinstall CS:GO, Bioshock (1) and Rocket League, but to no avail.

I have also tried to launch CS:GO and Bioshock (1) in compatibility mode (Windows 7 and 8, and Windows 7 and Vista respectively). This also didn't work. Same problems as described above.

I have the latest Windows updates as of August 6th, 2015. I know I can revert back to Win8.1, and I consider doing so if I can't fix this in the following week.

Please tell me if there's any information I can provide that'll be helpful to you. Any help is appreciable! *Biggrin

    Edit:
    My system specs are:
    - Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
    - Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.40 GHz
    - 8 GB DDR3 RAM
    - Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti with the latest Nvidia drivers

    :)

  2. Windows 10 troubleshooting & black screen

Im having a similar problem ever since i installed windows 10. Three scenarios all leading to unresponsive black screen with no mouse pointer, only responsive to power button. Left in idle, computer will go black screen unresponsive. If i close the lid(laptop)
and open it up again computer will go unresponsive. Also, if i perform a regular shut down function computer will go black screen unresponsive. This is a major difficulty.. i have to keep using the power button to turn it off then back on every single time
XD!!!! probably happened 6 times by now. since yesterday, what a pain. Thanks ^_-!

  3. Steam Games Black Screen

This is an issue I am having with every single steam game I play. Mainly this has been happening for the game - Battleblock Theater and Unturned

What happens is when I launch the game is all seems good and fine, but out of nowhere it will start to show a black screen that flashes on and off with maybe a 3 - 2 second interval. This is really annoying. It will then have a stay on there as a black screen.

For Unturned it keeps the black screen and I have to restart my computer - I have already tried ctrl + alt + delete

For Battleblock Theater it wont happen as often but when I close the game my whole screen with be put into a black screen and I have to restart - I have already tried ctrl + alt + delete

So you're saying the only thing I can do is wait for a Nvidia patch or game update? I just tried to launch GeForce Experience, but it, too, doesn't launch. It's stuck on the loading screen.

Also, if I were to do a clean install, would that change anything? Could it be that would help, or would it have no effect on this issue?

Okay, this is weird. All the sudden all my games that freezed and had black screen yesterday, works. No more freezes, no more black screen, no more slow shut down.

I can't tell you what I did, though, as I have done literally nothing since yesterday except browsing the Internet. The only "noticeable" difference (not really noticeable unless you go to Windows Update History) is the update "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.203.1578.0)".

Now, this is only speculation, but maybe Windows Defender was blocking the games from opening? I have no idea, but it's working now! *Biggrin

  7. eirikff - i did a clean install and it did the same thing. but mine was a clean install from the get go.

anytime you do an upgrade of an operating system its going to cause issues with games and apps, its a fact and microsoft warns people of it too.

its odd that you mentioned the blackscreen where i had the same issue, even with a different game.
I dont know what the fix is, but in the past when i upgraded or changed operating systems and even did a clean install and the game was broke still, it was a graphics or game patch that fixed it.
You might try a complete reinstall of the game, just overwrite the game thats already there, backup your game saves first. and see if that helps.

also search other game forums to see what you can come up with but unless there is some underlying graphics/display thing in windows 10 that hasnt been publicized much b i can only imagine its a game or graphics patch.
i havent tried but that one game as i havent had time but i also had to do a complete clean reload because of Windows 10 blinking screen issue that was in the beta's and not fixed until a complete wipe and load of the public release.

When launched, most games will go to black screen and be unresponsive

I don't really think there was a game patch. BioShock (1) is fairly old now, and I don't really think they develop it anymore. I find it far more likely that there was a "hidden" graphics driver patch. Or that there was some kind of black magic... As I stated previously, I did try to do a complete reinstall of two of the games; CS:GO and BioShock. However, it didn't yield any result, I still got the freezes and black screens.

I know I'm going a little off topic here, but the only problem I have with doing a clean install is all the programs, drivers, etc. I have to redownload. Also the problem with knowing you've backed up all your important file. Do you have a recommendation for the best way to do this? Any software that could help me organize my programs and files?

    Thanks!

  9. i'm with you i lost a HIGHLY configured Win7 machine because i "upgraded" to Win10 and with all the screen blinking and not being able to even get to a log in i was forced to do a complete wipe and reload... well.. ok like 8 times (no kidding 8 times i had to wipe and reload windows 10 before the final came out and fixed the flicking/blinking explorer.exe and you couldnt even get to a log in).

I havent looked real hard but there may be something with regards to a video codec blocking it since most games start with a video sequence, so maybe install 32/64bit klite codec pack and see if that fixes it.

not sure how to answer your question about way to catalog what you have and have to reload.
you maybe want to think about doing a dual boot with Win7/Win10
or take your current hard drive with everything on it and put it into your Win10 and start installing the apps you need and copying files over.

I just removed EVGA PrecisionX and all my black screen problems disappeared. I understand not everyone will be using it, but if anyone else is, then try uninstalling it and rebooting and launching the game again. After a full day and a half of constant problems with World of Tanks's install, removing PrecisionX really did the trick.

It might help someone out there to know.
