  1. When will IE and Edge go away?

    I've experienced this too.

  2. I got a batch of Windows 10 updates this week.
Many (most?) were described as fixes for IE and Edge.

    That got me thinking ...
Does anyone still use those ?
When will they finally go away (and thereby obviate the need for their updates) ?

    :)

  3. When I go to www.microsoft.com (tried Edge, Firefox, IE 11) the formatting of the page is off

I contacted Microsoft support. The lady changed my DNS entry to 4.2.2.1/8.8.8.8 in the TCP/IP v 4 settings and unchecked TCP/IP v6. This fixed the problem with the page display, but it made it so that I could not connect to my company network, so I had
to change all the settings back. The woman didn't tell me why she did this and a friend of mine suggested that our org was a target of a DNS poisoning attack. The Microsoft page doesn't work with my settings back the way they are...

Somehow in each case you are not getting any CSS. I can simulate what you are seeing in IE by using View, Style No Style (Alt-V y N). I tried to simulate the possibility that you were using Compatibility View by using the Developer Tools to specify
User-Agent string IE7 and Document Mode 7 but even that worked (sort of). So I would suspect that you have some kind of external filter in place that is preventing CSS at least from that site. You can use the Developer Tools too, to see what is happening.
E.g. press F12 and look at the Network tab after doing a Ctrl-F5 (Refresh). Then you can use the Content Filter for Style sheets to see if you would have been receiving any CSS. There should be some.

Alternatively, see if the Canadian site gives you any better service

    Hi there
for some silly things that still use Ms Silverlight you will need IE for example running SKY GO which currently only works on IE11.

SKY could easily implement its DRM stuff like other people do with standard software rather than Silverlight which I don't think anybody else on the entire planet uses any more.

It should be possible for sky developers as SKY GO runs easily (and legally) on Android phones and tablets so they must have implemented another form of DRM protection for their content.

At least for now Windows users have to use IE if they want to run SKY GO on their computers.

  6. If I understand you correctly, IE is needed for certain legacy applications. Silverlight requires it, so any app built on Silverlight will require IE.

But this will all go away, right? Flash is legacy. Silverlight is legacy. New apps ought not be built with those tools, and they'll fade away.

For my part, I never use IE, nor Edge. Silverlight isn't even installed. I think Flash is here, but I think it's not being used.

My thinking is that these legacy components ought to be put out to pasture, much as was the horse-and-buggy a century ago.

DirectX is another legacy function that only IE supports. It is extensively used on Enterprise Intranets. Microsoft don't want force their Enterprise customers to re-write all their Intranet applications (at great expense) so IE will be here for some time to come.

When will IE and Edge go away?

The New sky player is a stand alone player and only uses the default browser to open the sky webpage, I only use for Sports programming so not sure of other programming. This change came into use several months ago

Virgin Media used to use Flash but their latest player is now HTML5,I think, but anyway is browser Independent

    Hi there
    @Barman58

Sky Go on Windows still requires Silverlight so if you are watching SKY GO on a Windows device you still need IE11.

It works fine on Android devices so as I've said before there must be people in SKY who can handle DRM via HTML5,

So far though you still have to use IE11 to watch SKY GO on a Windows machine.

I think a problem is SKY still have to support a load of legacy subscribers -- people like NETFLIX came straight in via streaming so were able to use new technology such as HTML5 from "The Off".

This is always a problem -- the "New Kids on the block" don't have zillions of legacy subscribers to support.

That said I only use SKY GO these days for the sport channels I love English PL football (refuse to call it Soccer !!) and the various forms of Rugby (League and Union) . -- I'm sure if SKY gave me an option to get these via Internet only without having to get a SKY subscription they could make a whole slew of money -- but sometimes people have so much money -- are they bothered at making any more !!!.

Incidentally -- not sure if this will ever appear on SKY SPORTS bit there is actually an Icelandic Cricket federation who hope one day to appear in a Cricket world cup --imagine then if Iceland CC were to beat England at Lords !!!!!!.

    No It's not Apr 1 !!!!

  11. What? Now when Edge finally is working decently well people want to get rid of it? Sure there are a few quirk that annoys me, but overall it's a decent browser.

I used to dislike Edge, but it's getting better and better and right now I rarely use any other browser. I even use Edge Beta on my Android devices. *Smile

    @jimbo45

Sky Sports Player is an independent Windows Application, Sky Sports.exe, It still opens the Sky sports page for entering credentials and selecting content to watch, in your default browser - but it then runs stand alone to actually serve the video content .

    http://partner.help.sky.com/

As i source my content through Virgin Media It's only the sky sports channels I get through the sky app, am not sure if the general content has switched yet but sports did so

This is of course the UK market other markets could still be using outdated trechnologies

When will IE and Edge go away?

    Hi folks

SKY GO is for the general SKY stuff you can watch on a device -- including SKY SPORTS. The stand alone sport application is fine also - so hopefully SKY will use similar DRM technology to NETFLIX etc (HTML5 I think or similar).

Edge I tend to dislike as I still don't like applications without Menus - decent Apps IMO allow you to hide menus if you so wish.

When I'm working on 3 or 4 large monitors I neither need nor want applications to look like they have been designed for running on a 13 cm mobile phone screen !!

Firefox is fine for me still. That's the one I tend to use most of the time.

    Cheers

MS will never drop Edge. It would be a total humiliation. On tablets and touch screens Edge is great. I would use Edge all tthe time in my non touch laptop if it was not for one truly irritating bug. When I rapid scroll on a newly presented page with my mouse wheel, it sonetimes causes a swipe right action dismissing the screen. I have found I can avoid that to some degree if I single click the new page before scrolling but I often forget, and it does not always work.
