Windows 10: Whenever I click "Move To," my file explorer freezes and becomes unusable.

Hi Reddit!

Whenever I click "Move To" to move a file, my file explorer freezes and cannot be used. Is there any way you could help me fix this issue? I would prefer not to do a factory reset as I have 100GB+ worth of files.

Windows 10 File Explorer Unusable

With the last few Windows 10 updates the file explorer has gone from irritating to use to now almost unusable. It is severely broken.

There are so many issues it would be hard to list them all.

 

File Explorer freezes when hovering the cursor over the "create" section.

• Did you make any changes prior to this issue?
• Are you getting any error messages after File Explorer freezes?
• What troubleshooting have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest you restart Windows Explorer by following the steps below:

• Type Task Manager in search bar.
• Click Task Manager.
• On the pop-up window, under Windows processes, scroll-down to
  Windows Explorer.
• Right-click Windows Explorer, and click Restart.

Files in File Explorer crashes on Windows 10

Provide us additional information to assist you better with this issue;

• What is the make and model of your computer?
• Were you able to see any error code/ error message when the system randomly freezes?
• Does the system freeze specific to any particular task on your computer?

I suggest you to perform the below troubleshooting steps and check.

Method 1: Run System Maintenance Troubleshooter

System Maintenance troubleshooter finds and clean up unused files and shortcuts and performs maintenance tasks.

Follow the steps given below:

• 
  Type Troubleshooting in the Search box from the desktop.
  
• 
  Select the Troubleshooting option.
  
• 
  Select View All option and select the
  System Maintenance.
  
• 
  Click on Next to perform the System Maintenance troubleshooter and follow the steps.
  

Method 2: End the Windows Explorer process and create the new one.

• Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, under Process
  tab, search for Windows Explorer.
• Right click on it and click on End task.
• Click on File in the Task Manager
  at top left corner of the window and select Run new task.
• Type explorer.exe and click on Ok.

Method 3: Run Memory Diagnostic Tool.


Follow the below steps:

• Press Windows key and type
  Memory Diagnostic.
• Select Windows Memory Diagnostics
  and click on Restart now and check for problems.
• Follow the on-screen instructions.
