Windows 10: Whenever I open a video in the photos app, my computer audio stops working

Whenever I open a video in the photos app, my computer audio stops working. To be clear, after I open any video in the photos app regardless of format, my computer refuses to play any audio until I first close the photos app, then disable and re-enable "Speakers/Headphones" settings -> system -> sound -> manage sound devices -> Speakers/Headphones -> Disable -> Enable. It does this whether I use the built-in speakers or wired earphones. However, this is not an issue if I use wireless earphones. Audio, video, and Photos stop working properly.

Every once in a while my video, audio files, sound, and photo viewing stops working correctly. When I try to play a video, audio, or view a photo through the default windows program for it (Movies & TV, Groove Music, Photos), it stalls for about a minute
and then I get this error. "The wait operation timed out". My audio just stops working completely.

So even when I do open a video through another media player like VLC or windows media player, there is no sound. Another odd thing is if I open photos in GIMP or Windows Photo Viewer, they are fine. However, when I try audio files through Windows Media
Player or iTunes, they open, but have trouble playing the audio file.

The annoying part is the fact that youtube videos stop working during this time and I have absolutely no sound. These issues usually while I am watching videos on youtube. I had a few instances when this happened while playing a game (League of Legends).
I usually use Google Chrome.

What can be causing this? Is there any fixes besides restarting? Restarting my computer works but it is really annoying and inconvenient. I did not have this problem before upgrading to windows 10.

Update: Just had an occurrence where my desktop went black and taskbar is unresponsive, but I was still able to Alt + Tab to the programs I had opened already and after a refresh, youtube was working again. I can't confirm if my video or photos would of
worked because of the black desktop.

 

photos app stopped working in Windows 10

I am trying to open photos in Windows 10. The default app is Microsoft Photos. The app just stopped working this afternoon. When I try to open a picture it comes up with an error saying "The app didn't start". I have tried to delete and reinstall the
app, but the uninstall options I have tried cannot find the app. I have searched to find the Photos application file on the computer and I cannot find it, but when I try to reinstall or update the app from the windows store it says the app is already installed.
There is no way to reinstall it. The app icon is listed in the All Apps list, but when I click on the button there is a brief flash and I get bounced back to the desktop. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Failing that, is there a way to I reset the default photo viewer to Windows Photo Viewer? It is a pain to have to go through the right click - "Open With" process to pick a different program every time I have to open a photo.

 

Photos are opening with Paint instead of Photos app
