Windows 10: Whenever I select something in the images folder file explorer freezes.

Selecting something in a folder thats in the images folder also causes the app to freeze, I have tried restarting my computer but it did nothing.

The issue that you’ve encountered regarding the File Explorer may be caused by some configuration or files mismatched. To sort out your concern, we suggest that you reset the folder settings from the
Folder Options. This will reboot the folder’s preferences to its default state and remove any possible software conflict. To do this, you may follow these steps:

• Click Start, type File Explorer, and press
  Enter.
• On the File Explorer window, click the View tab > Options > Change folder and search options > View.
• Under the Folder views section, click Reset Folders, and then select
  Yes to confirm.
• Once you’re done, click OK, and then check if the issue persists.

Note: This process will remove the list of files that you recently opened.

Windows explorer hangs selecting images or audio files

Hi Marrion,

as I had described I tried point 1 to 4 already.

I also went through point 5. I further did download the ISO from the latest version and did an update install. Nothing changed.

I cleared the thumbnail cache again, because only a few images were shown. Again no change. As soon as I click on an image file explorer freezes. Also it happened again that Outlook froze when I clicked on an email with an image attachement.

When I use the open dialog for example in Photoshop I can click on an image and the open (explorer) dialog does not freeze. I can also access the images from bridge which also shows previews correctly.

I again tried to disable all non Microsoft services, autostart programs and shell extentions. I then was able to access the image in the email. Outlook did not freeze, but file explorer still does. I did this before and even after one by one all services have been re-enabled I still was able to access the email and attachement. A day later the prolem was back again.

Despite all repairs Windows file explorer shows various issues besides the freezing:

• The result of updates like changing file name or deleteing files are not displayed. I have to press F5 for a refresh.
  

• image and audio files show empty document icons or nothing at all and no thumbnails. It happened before that pdf icons where displayed, but nothing for jpgs. I tried pressing F5 and empty document icons for the images were displayed. Pressing F5 again made the Adobe pdf icons disapear and just show empty document icons.
  
• When opening a folder the "green bar of infinity" shows up in the addressbar. It continues and never stops. When I open "This PC" (in German "Dieser PC") nothing is shown, besides a message that the content of the folder will be displayed...
  
• When opening the same folder multiople times, sometimes the view options are greyed out. I can't switch between list, details, symbols etc.
  

I remember that I had all of those issues in the past years already on different machines. There must be somethign that again and again causes those bugs.

How can I fix this, without wiping the computer?

Update:

I opened Adobe Bridge to look at a folder with jpeg and heic files. The first files were displyed then Bridge hang. Bridge uses about 35% of the CPU and dllhost/Com Surrogate about 17% (process explorer shows a bit lower numbers).
in process explorer the properties of dllhost show a dozen of threads regarding ntdll.dll!pRealeaseCleanupGroupMembers+0x450. On of them is responsible for the high CPU. I left it running over night and it is still running! After killing and restarting Bridge it said it had an issue with the graphics driver and disabled hardware acceleration. I don't know if this was just due to killing of the process. Despite the disabled hardware acceleration Bridge still hangs displaying the files after reopening, but doesn't use much CPU.

I restartet Windows and opened Bridge again with the image folder. It displayed a few images than hang. bridge did not react. Com Surrogate was high again. I killed the process and Bridge reacted again.

I then tried the same with file explorer. I opened the first folder. Only one of 22 thumbnails was displayed. I clicked on one image and file explorer hang. I killed Com Surrogate and suddendly all thumbnails were displayed! I could also click the images andopen them! Preview worked, too!

What is causing this issue? How to prevent it?
