  1. Which account set-up for new Windows 10 machine?

I'm a student and just got a new machine to satisfy my hardware requirements working from home, but I'm unsure how to set it up.

My old Windows 10 device still works well, so I would like to keep using it as personal computer in evenings and weekends, dedicating my new device to work only (in the hope it will reduce distractions and improve productivity...).

My query is which type of account I should use on my new device. For now, I have logged on using my personal account (@hotmail.com) but to keep work and personal separate across my two devices, I'd like to avoid that. To me it seems I have three, maybe four options:

    1. Keep using the same personal account but turn off all synching, cloud activity etc.

    2. Create a local account (like in the old days). Windows really tries to discourage me from this, though.

    3. Create a new Microsoft account (eg oldname_work@hotmail.com) only for this device

    4. Somehow try to use my institutional Office 365 account, but it didn't accept that email address.

Does anybody have any advice on which option might be the neatest or smartest or safest? Thanks!

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”

Microsoft account and deleting all settings of Windows 10 Preview

    Ok.

If, instead, when I install a Windows 10 system, I create a local account and configure it and then turned it into a Microsoft account. At this point, how can I avoid that the settings are synchronized automatically when I finish this step and to synchronize the new settings that I had already set when I had the local account?

    Thanks

    Bye

Which account set-up for new Windows 10 machine?

Settings can't be opened using the built-in administrator account

    Hello,
Unfortunately I have the same issue as Dabz from upgrading win7 to win10.
I've tried opening settings using all the suggested methods and it will not load using my account with Administrator access nor the built-in Administrator profile. I also tried other methods not listed such as using Run. Control panel is just a stepping stone to add users in Settings.
I'm also having explorer.exe issues, which I believe is preventing Settings from loading.
Using cmd (Admin) I successfully created a new user profile [and granted admin access also using cmd (Admin)], however win10 will not allow this account to log on. win10 does not list this new user within control panel but it does in the start menu. win10 will not allow to log in or switch to the new account via the start menu either.
I can access settings in Safe Mode but this will not allow me to create a new account.
Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
