  1. Which files to delete...

I am going to remove the "windows.old" folder now the update has gone well, and what to delete the "$windows.bt" folder as well... do I use disk clean up and remove the two highlighted?

  2. Which files are safe to delete?

Can anyone provide further insight on this issue? For example, is c:\swapfile.sys safe to delete? Are the other safe-to-delete file locations in Windows 7, 8, or 10?

    Thanks.

  3. Which files are safe to delete?

    Thanks for the reply, Ruth.

I sometimes use Disk Cleanup, but that's not what I'm asking about.

When trying to remove hidden malware, it's often necessary to boot into a non-native environment, such as with the Windows installation media, or with Linux live media. This allows for the easy removal of files that are "locked", but have no good reason
to be. When booted into such an environment, tools that exist on the hard drive cannot, and shouldn't be used; therefore, it's necessary to manually remove these files.

Can you help me complete the above list of locations where delete-able files are known to exist? Thanks.

    Which files to delete...

Yes. Previous is Windows.old, Temporary is upgrade files which are no longer needed when upgrade has been done.

lol wow! Sorry I just had to comment on this. Your previous Windows folder is 45 GB big? That was a huge waste of space just sitting there on the computer. Good thing you freed that up, right? lol
