In addition to the above. Here's my suggestion in step by step.
I assume you have Macrium Installed in your current HD and already made a backup copy.

1. Connect your new HD via USB port and boot up.
2. Run Macrium, click on Restore tab then select the Backup Image that you made to restore
3. click on "select a different target disk" then select your new HD as destination
   
   
   
4. Proceed to restore then Shutdown and disconnect the old HD and replace with the new HD
5. Boot up with your new HD.

@injaneb, thanks you put me on the right track! In my case there were 2 extra steps:

1. The extra EFI was not on the C disk but on the J disk (the target of the backup) which was an external USB. I don't know why an EFI was made there. To remove that EFI partition, follow these instructions [1] carefully. I needed only the instructions using the built-in diskpart tool. Just make sure you selected the right disk!
2. Before redoing the backup, delete the files on J: (the target disk) that were created by the previous botched backup. Their existence would cause exactly the same error code to show up.

Error: "Backup location: Local Disk (J Error code: 0x81000001", while performing backup and restore on Windows 10

I am trying to make a "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" for Windows 10, to an external drive and when it gets to 100% done there is an error "Backup location: Local Disk (J Error code: 0x81000001" every thing is good until 100%.

The options given are:

Try to run backup again.

Change backup settings.

I've tried both and I still get the same error.
