Hi L Dennis,Welcome to Microsoft Community.I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern. The reason for the abnormal display of shortcuts may be that you changed the name of the icon before,Due to the system's caching mechanism, the icons may not be visible at that time, and the icon cache was deleted when you restarted your computer or cleaned the computer's garbage. It is also possible that the shortcut was deleted a long time ago, or other reasons caused the icon to display abnormally. You can take the following approachs:Clear icon cachePress windows+R and type in the following address

  2. Deleted icons stay on desktop (not in desktop folder)

Resetting Icon Cache on Windows 10

Right-click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin).
Type cd %homepath%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer and press Enter.

To verify the location of the icon cache database files, enter the dir iconcache* command and press Enter.

After executing the command, you should see a list of the following database files:
    iconcache_1280.db
    iconcache_16.db
    iconcache_1920.db
    iconcache_256.db
    iconcache_2560.db
    iconcache_32.db
    iconcache_48.db
    iconcache_768.db
    iconcache_96.db
    iconcache_custom_stream.db
    iconcache_exif.db
    iconcache_idx.dbiconcache_sr.db
    iconcache_wide.db
    iconcache_wide_alternate.db

Now you have to stop File Explorer. For that, enter the taskkill /f /im explorer.exe command and hit Enter to execute it. File Explorer uses the icon cache database, so without disabling it, you won’t be able to remove the icon cache files.

Once File Explorer is disabled, type the del iconcache* command and press Enter to delete the icon cache files.

If you receive an alert that the access is denied, double-check if you are running Command Prompt with administrative privileges. To double-check that icon cache files have successfully been removed, enter the del iconcache* command one more time and hit Enter.

If you still see a list of some icon cache files, close the apps that are running and using the mentioned icons and then repeat the above-listed steps.

Finally, enter the explorer.exe command and press Enter to enable File Explorer.

    Close Command Prompt.

Or you could download Thumbnail & Icon Cache Rebuilder
Thumbnail and Icon Cache Rebuilder for Windows 10

I forget the original source where I found this info that resolved my same issue.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Icons changed by themselves

    Hi Thomas,

If the icons changed after you restart Windows, any of the following can be true: The icon cache (This is where Windows keeps copies of each icon.) is not updated correctly, corrupted icon database or icon layouts are not being saved upon restarting Windows.

We need a bit more information to help you better, please answer these questions:

    • Can you describe how did you customize the icons?
    • Did you use the default icons or you've downloaded new icons from the internet?
    • Are you pertaining to the Windows Explorer icons or the Desktop icons?

In this type of scenario, you may need to delete the cache files in order to rebuild the Icon cache. Check out these steps:

    • Open Windows File Explorer.
    • Navigate to this folder: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
    • Now, you will see a lot of files like iconcache_32.db, iconcache_48.db, iconcache_96.db, iconcache_256.db, iconcache_1024.db, iconcache_1280.db, iconcache_1600.db, iconcache_1920.db, iconcache_2560.db,
      iconcache_exif.db, iconcache_idx.db, iconcache_sr.db, iconcache_wide.dd, iconcache_wide_alternate.db, etc.
    • Delete them all to purge and rebuild your icon cache.
    • Reboot your computer and the icon cache will automatically rebuild upon reboot.

We'll be here if you need additional assistance.

  4. White ICONS - I did all of the notes below and for some reason I cannot delete all .db...

White Sticky Notes window opens with sticky and cannot be stopped

I did what you suggested. I also tried both repairing and resetting the Sticky Notes app, and nothing changed. I'm still getting the main white window every time I open a new note if one is not already open. If I right click on my start menu shortcut and
click on open new note, I get the white window and two new notes. If I right click and select notes list, I get a single note along with the white window, which I'm pretty sure now is the notes list.
