Windows 10: White vertical bar flickers in my taskbar when I'm connected to my monitor

A white bar flickers, appears and disappears in my taskbar for a fraction of a second. When it appears, all my taskbar icons jump one space to the left, and the immediately jump back to the right.It's annoying watching my taskbar icons jump back and forth while I'm trying to work.

Vertical White Bar in Notification Area After 14271


Immediately after upgrading my Insider's copy of Windows 10 to build 14271 I noticed a vertical white bar in the notification area. See the screenshot:





As you can see, it has a little arrow pointing to the right. If I rest my pointer on the bar, no tooltip appears. If I click on the bar, it moves to the left and now the little arrow inside points to the left.

Any ideas what the heck this is?

I've had an ongoing problem for the past year or so, where a flickering line appears across the taskbar, usually after my laptop has been used for a prolonged period of time or has just come out of sleep mode (so is not continual). This flickering bar causes
the screen to flicker too and is altogether really irritating.

The issue seems to disappear when my graphics driver is uninstalled.

I have done the following:

- Checked and removed any apps which may be causing this

- Factory reset my laptop

- Updated my graphics driver

- Uninstalled then reinstalled graphics driver

I have been through the entire troubleshooting process with Intel (they installed different graphics driver etc), however, it reappears. They now suggest it may be a BIOS or hardware problem.

I'm looking for help as I am unsure how to proceed from here.

Hi Jim,

To be able to drag the taskbar and make it narrower the way you like it, please unlock it first.

To do it, here are the steps:

• Right click on the Taskbar and unlock it by unchecking the
  Lock all taskbars option.
  
  
• Drag the edge of the bar and arrange it according to your preference.
• Right click on the task bar and lock it again once done.
