  1. Why am I having so much trouble connecting two PCs on my home network?

I currently have 2 desktop PCs and a laptop in different rooms in my house. All are fairly new and fairly high-end. All run Windows 10 1909.

I usually only have one of them on at a time, but occasionally I want to transfer files between them so I'll have two on at once, and try to network them.

It hardly ever works like it should. I am following all the instructions -- Private Network, Network Discovery on, automatic setup on, file sharing turned on, the relevant folders shared read/write with Everyone, etc. Under "All Networks," Public folder sharing on, password protection turned off. I typically use my home ethernet to connect them. The cables and adapters are clearly working well, since I can download files from the internet at gigabit speeds.

I can't remember the last time both PCs saw each other. About half the time, one PC sees the other's files, and I can transfer back and forth using that PC, but the other one doesn't see anything. The other half of the time, neither PC sees the other one. I'll reboot them a couple of times, get nowhere, and give up and use a portable drive to transfer the files.

I don't do anything different the times they work and the times they don't. It seems to be completely random.

Everything I read in books and internet articles makes it sound like "it just works," and it certainly should this far into the Windows timeline, but I have never had much luck with it, so I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what.

    Any advice?

Having some trouble with networking - advice needed

Yes, I did reset the router (several times actually). As for wires, the main PC connects to the internet through the DSL modem/router just fine, so the cable should not be faulty. As for the laptop, its connection is wireless, so there are no wires to check *Slap :slap:

However, your suggestion did give me an idea. I connected the laptop to the switch directly with a cable, and disabled the wireless connection. I'm getting an error that says "network is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network source... (yada-yada-yada)... The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

@ wiak - I have McAfee's firewall on the laptop, the same as it always was. I had it on the PC, too, but the subscription for the Internet Security Suite expired, so I uninstalled it, set up XP's standard firewall on the PC, and have installed Avast for anti-virus. I can try XP's firewall on the laptop, too.

  3. Losing network connection

Hello Dear, if you have a laptop or a PC with a wireless network adapter, you can see a list of available wireless networks and then connect to one of those networks. The wireless networks will only appear if your PC has a wireless network adapter installed, the adapter is turned on, and the wireless access point is in range.

    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.

    2. In the left pane, under Network Tasks, click View available wireless networks.
In case, If you don't see the network you want to connect to, click Refresh network list. If you see the network but the signal is weak, move the PC closer to the wireless router.

    3. Click the network you want to connect to, and then click Connect.

    4. If you're connecting to a secure network, type the security key, and then click OK.

I Hope you solve out your query soon.

Why am I having so much trouble connecting two PCs on my home network?

    PC wont connect to network.

I have a HP computer that is set off aside that I am going to use for folding and for some reason it wont connect to my network. I have the modem connected to a switch, and from there my computer and the HP is connected, but I can get a connection but not my HP comp. Now when I hit repair it says that it couldn't do anything because it stops at IP renewing. I have even went into networking and changed the network connection to the top of the list.

See I hit repair and it says that it is renewing the IP address but it doesn't, then error.

How can I get it connected to my internet?
