Windows 10: Why can I not remove my son from my family?

About a year ago I swapped from a Microsoft device to a non-Microsoft device and was trying to remove my son from Microsoft family as I could only access it through his computer, but despite me being the owner/primary adult of the group, it is claiming I am not and won't let me remove him. This is the message name blanked out for nowYou can't remove ____ from the family groupFamily members under statutory age need an adult's consent to join a family group. Only the adult that granted consent for ____ can remove this family member. Ask the family organizer who granted ____ consent to remove _

How do I remove my son from his friend's Microsoft Family?

Follow the steps below on how you can remove the child account from the Family:

• Using the child account, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/family.
• Click on Remove yourself under the child account.
• Click Remove to confirm.
• You will get an email confirmation that you have been removed from the family.

• Make sure that your son’s account is a child account and not an adult account.
  
• Check if your son’s account is already part of another family group. If it is, then you need to remove it from that group first before adding it to your family group.
  
  - let him login to family.microsoft.com to check if he belongs to a family group or not
  
• Try adding your son’s account again after a few hours or days.

With regard to your query, we suggest that you follow the steps below to completely remove the Microsoft account family safety feature for your son's account.

• From a web browser, go to
  http://account.microsoft.com/family and sign in with the Microsoft account of an adult in the family.
• To remove a child, choose Remove at the top of the section labeled
  Select a child to view or edit their settings.
• Select the person you want to remove from the family.
• Select the Remove button that appears when you've chosen the person to remove.
