Windows 10: why can't I choose non-Microsoft default apps?

I had a major system crash last week which ultimately lead to reinstalling Windows. There appears to have been a change in the way default apps are chosen. I can, for instance, no longer click the "Make Firefox Default" button in Firefox and have it become the default web browser. Instead, it takes me to system setting/default apps and I am supposed to choose Firefox from there. But I can't. Also cannot for the default image viewer, which I prefer to be Irfanview. The ONLY choices are Microsoft app. I checked the registry for default apps and Firefox IS there along with Microsoft apps. But I a

Choosing Default Apps & Insider Programme

To resolve your concern, kindly choose the default apps by file type. To do this, follow these steps:

• Click the Windows logo (Start button).
• Click the gear icon (Settings).
• Choose System.
• Select Default apps.
• Click Choose default apps by file type.
• Check all of the video file type, and then check if you can change the default app to your preferred application.

I suggest you to follow the below steps.

1) Right click on the file and select choose another app to open. It will display the list of apps to open.

2) If the app is not listed then select more apps and check if you can find it.
